Roll Call: Wisconsin - Madison vs Milwaukee

what’s the best in madison?

Depends what you’re looking for.

Osteria Papavero from a James Beard winning chef for Italian, L’Etoile for French, Mint Mark, Fairchild, Heritage Tavern, and Pig in a Fur Coat just to name a few.

Probably have 10 people tell me why I’m wrong, but that’s okay too.

wife’s bday dinner before nate bargatze show in feb. looks like mint mark or heritage tavern will do. may still entertain harvey house.

doesn’t need to be fancy, but if it is and worth it, that’s ok.

Unsolicited but…allow plenty of time for traffic and parking. Parking and getting into the Alliant Energy Center has been notoriously slow for big events.

good advice!

i have us getting there right at 7 and i’m assuming he doesn’t go on right then, and i’m pretty sure he has an opener, etc. so hopefully if we’re 15 minutes late or so no big deal.

Any of the ones I listed, plus more, and the HH aren’t going to disappoint. As @jimjay said give yourself some time to get into the coliseum, 25-30 minutes isn’t out of the realm of possibility with how things have been going there lately.

Very solid list. I’m always disappointed by L’Etoile, for the price it needs to be better than it is. I might throw Ha Long Bay or Ahan in there but they are probably a tier down from Harvey House, Pig in a Fur coat, Fairchild and Mint Mark for me

Osteria Papavero from that list is off the charts for Italian if you’re in the mood for it.

My buddy used to be the GM there. He said they had regulars from Chicagoland drive up to Madison monthly because they liked the food so much more than what they could easily reserve in Chicago.

I’m listening…you been to Ca’Lucchenzo? Compare and contrast for me?

Trent, we’re taking a field trip to Papavero!

I have not. I should though.

Judging from pictures, Papavero is simpler food and Ca’Lucchenzo is a lot more refined. Papavero is a lot of stuff Francesco just made at home when he lived in Italy. The concept is in the name - Osteria is a type of Italian establishment that pretty much just serves wine and super simple food. It’s just hearty, Italian comfort food.

People go nuts over their lasagna. I’ve never had the privilege of trying it - they’ll post on FB at 10am that they have it that day and it’ll be sold out by 11:30.

The lasagna is absolutely heavenly.

Also, osterias are probably my favorite way to dine when in Italy. As you said, simple, hearty food, but I have never been disappointed. The fact they are also so affordable makes it even better.

i’m not sure heavy comfort food is what we want before a show!

Hey Everyone - now that The Supper Club is officially open, I am excited to kick off the sign-up for our event at Erin Hills in May. This started last year as a gathering of 10 of us knocking the rust off of our games as we come out of hibernation, and I am excited to bring it back as part of Wisconsin’s Roost (see The Supper Club is Open - NLU Wisconsin Roost)

Event details can be found in it’s own thread here where I’ll post any updates or things to know: No Reservations Taken @ Erin Hills 5/25 - Presented by The Supper Club

Hey, here is a cool thing. Moorland Road Golf Center just installed two Full Swing sims above their main lobby, the Sky Box. Beyond the two adjacent sim spaces with seating, there’s turf “carpeting” with a cup on one side of the room near the sims to function as a room-wide putting green (I think). On the other side is a bar and a separate space with a few couches and a TV. Should be a good spot!

Planning a Monday-Friday trip 5/27-5/31. Right now the goal is:
5/27 36 at Erin Hills (waiting to hear back)
5/28 18 at Lawsonia links then afternoon Sandbox
5/29 Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes

We don’t have anything planned for Thursday or Friday yet. I’m not sure about driving out to Whistling, but it seems tough to get all the way out there from Denver and not play.

Not opposed to playing a couple local courses closer to Milwaukee to close it out. Lac Le Belle seems divisive and nothing else jumps off the page. Any recs?

Also, anywhere between Sand Valley and Milwaukee that is great bar to post up at for a couple hours? Looking for somewhere to try all the musts (beer, curds, etc.) for several hours.

And finally, is going to be 3 of us. So if anyone is interested in jumping in I would certainly appreciate it over a random.

I highly recommend LLB, if you can get a twilight time. The Eagle Springs Morning + LLB Afternoon is a pretty unique and amazing combination if you can pull it off. I try to do it atleast twice a year when visiting my Fiancee’s parents in Dousman. It’s an amazingly fun day between ES and the greens at LLB.
