I’ve only known it to have the trailer but if I remember correctly Harvey took out the clubhouse and the trailer was the ‘temporary’ solution to reopen the course with.
Random Sighting: Walked Memorial Trail over the weekend and saw the course was looking great with the fairways and greens a bright green but the rough burned-off brown probably from the weather. Looked like TPC Scottsdale of Houston.
Winter grass was planted as instructed by the PGA tour. They used to paint the greens but no longer will be doing that. Will be interesting to see the spring to summer grass transition.
Interesting…could you elaborate? Was that just for aesthetics or I assume that grass grows better in the winter? Either way, the course looked great!
Houston folks, where would you recommend a person go to get fit in the area? Friend of mine is looking for more than just a golf galaxy fitting.
I’ve never been personally, but I’ve heard good things about Axis Golf Academy at Blackhorse.

It’s been a while, but back in 2018, I chose to try the iron fitting at the Golf Club of Houston and could not have been happier with that decision. I liked that we started inside, hitting out to the range from the mats in the hitting bays, and when we had narrowed things down, we went out and hit from grass. I felt like it was a very thorough fitting. And although I did chose to buy from them, I didn’t feel pressured to do so. Really good experience.

Houston gang we’ve got 1 opening for the Texas Cup, 4/5-4/7. Here’s the thread about it:
It’s a 3 day Ryder Cup style event between Houston, Austin, and DFW. Lots of fun.
Staying downtown this weekend. First time
Where am I eating? Drinking? Getting coffee?
I’m staying the Spring Hill suites on Dallas st.
Most of the good coffee spots are closed on the weekend (I think), but I know that Three Keys in Finn Hall is open on Saturday, I’d walk over there, should just be a few blocks away.
A few spots I’d try to get into for Dinner in that general area would be Nancy’s Hustle (Eado), Xochi (Downtown), Bludorn (Allen Parkway, probably a 5-10 minute uber, just sit at the bar), Original Ninfa’s or El Tiempo on Navigation, Tiny Champions or Gypsy Poet for pizza (Eado and Midtown respectively)
I’m mostly a beer guy, in that area I’d prioritize St. Arnold (great beer garden and good food), Frost Town and equal parts
Thank you
I actually get in on Thursday and then have most of Friday to prep for the marriage seminar. I am doing Friday evening through Sunday afternoon.
So Thursday night through Friday afternoon I can prioritize some places and kind of get around and check some spots out
This is a good list.
Would add Reserve 101 (phenomenal whiskey selection) is about a 2 block walk from the springhill on Dallas st. Were also partial to Houston Watch Company and Captain Foxhearts for cocktails - both about a 5 min uber / drive.
And while its chain adjacent The Flying Saucer would be an easy way to get a variety of local brews…10 min walk away.
Houstonians and dwellers of the Greater Houston Adjacency:
We’ve got the Space City Slam coming up on 5/3 and 5/4. Friday, we’ll play 36 at Gus. Then, on Saturday, we conclude at Cypresswood Traditions. We’ll be doing Stableford scoring, with Gus accumulating half-points and full points at Traditions.
You can sign up here: 2024 STROH's Meet Up - Google Sheets
This is a STROHS event, but membership isn’t required.
We have one spot open at 12:50 at Gus on Friday.
Hi Houston guis:
My trip to Sweetens got nixed with the announcing of the course closure for the summer. Three of our 8 are in the League City area so we are moving our trip there because of short notice.
We were thinking Wildcat (which course is better?), The Wilderness, and Moody Gardens for a three day trip. Is there any place else we should look at? They aren’t members at any private clubs.
I don’t like Wildcat at all. Too many blind shots for me, especially playing it for the first time. I’m sure others might feel differently, but I’d skip it.
I haven’t played Wilderness in a long time, but it was really fun when I did. Moody is also good (and windy!). Both of those are good choices.
Might consider Gus Wortham (best city course in town). Can be tough to get a tee time, but the best course on the SE side of town. Also consider Timber Creek. It’s very close to League City and a great routing through tall trees. Conditioning can be hit or miss, but when it’s in good shape, it’s really good. Best course in League City is Magnolia Creek. It’s a links style 27 holes. It’s semi-private but with a phone call you might be able to get on.
If you are looking for a Strapped experience, I would recommend Bay Forest in La Porte. The conditions are almost always excellent. Just a local muni that punches way above its weight.
I cant argue with any of this… especially the part where Wildcat SUCKS. Not only are there blind shots on bad holes, but the pace of play is usually bad too.
