Roll Call: Houston

If you absolutely have to play Wildcat, play the Highlands. Lakes course might be the worst experience in the city. Wilderness is in great shape, I played it 10 days ago and had no issues other than an occasional 30 mph gust of wind.

For Wildcat, I prefer Highlands but both courses are awkward, and it is more expensive than it should be. Wilderness is a good spot. Golf Club of Houston and Highland Pines are both great tracks but will be a hike from League City.

For super strapped and keeping in the League City area, you could check out Bayou Golf Club. Its a decent track, but nothing special. Some good seafood down there though with Pier 6 and Gilhoolys. Gus and Timber Creek and Bay Forsest are all good options as well, as other have mentioned.
Also Beacon Lakes isnt amazing golf, but it is a lighted golf course, if you can’t get enough day golf.

Speaking of super strapped, has anyone played Pasadena muni (the old Ellington Field course) recently?

Thanks for all of the feedback. Making a few calls, Gus hasn’t answered just yet.

Hate to say it, but unless you are a week out and online at midnight it’s almost impossible to get a tee time there.

I think you can book 8-10 days out with a $20 fee per person now, kind like memorial does. You might call them and they might let you book and advance time for the fee, which is still pretty reasonable.

I may get drug for this - but if youre willing to drive Tour 18 was in great shape before all of the water last week - worth the experience if youve never played IMO.

Ill also cosign highland pines and GCOH - but again, quite a drive.

I would tell you to take a look at High Meadow Ranch - but that also falls into a huge travel time commitment.

Appreciate all the input. Anyone have an opinion on Battleground? Edited to add Pasadena Municipal as well? Having issues with scheduling, it seems everyone has events that week.

I would pass on both of them. I haven’t played Battleground in forever, but it has a long history of struggling with conditioning, and the layout is nothing to write home about. Pasadena is a goat track. Maybe, literally. If you want to pound beers and duck tee shots coming from every direction, then Pasadena is your place.

At the risk of experiencing Houston’s legendary traffic, you might want to expand the distance you’d be willing to go, if that’s an option.

For sure, that’s the next step! Thanks!

It’s most likely not strapped since I assume no one in the crew is a Houston resident, and it’s a drive, but Memorial is the crown jewel. Could argue it’s the best course in town, public or private. Big issue too (as many of fellow hitters here in Htown can attest) it’s extremely hard to get a tee time. Unfortunately our city is subpar for golf and most of the decent-great options are private

Public service announcement.

I played Southwyck this morning and the front nine is an absolute abomination. Grass is completely unkept off the fairways almost assuredly leading to lost balls and the fairways (I may have forgotten from previous plays) are so bumpy almost un drive able.

Luckily, the back nine is in decent condition and much more playable. I live close by and was curious why the greens fees were so cheap…well lessons learned.

I’m going to be in Frisco visiting family and I want to know if Fields Ranch East is worth the cost or is it going to be based on how much I value playing a major championship course.

Wrong roll call bud, the folks in Dallas can definitely help you out though:

Gentlemen,

I’m just curious about everyone’s opinion but I played the Lakes at Wildcat from the tips last week at a slope rating of 140 for fun, call me a masochist but I kind of enjoyed it. Does anyone else know what they consider a tough/high slope-rated course that is public in the Houston area?

Golf Club of Houston from the tips/Tournament tees has a slope in the 140’s if I remember correctly.

Bingo - 148 from the tips

Gentlemen of the Houston area:

I played a round at Wildcat a few weeks ago and got absolutely dunked on and stormed out. I got a raincheck, so if you are going to be heading there in the next 6 months and would like to save a few bucks for a round of golf, DM me and I will hook you up.

I just can’t get on board with Wildcat. Only played Highlands though. Too many awkward holes. 435 yard par 4s where you have to hit 6 iron off the tee just doesn’t do it for me.
