I’ve played Kaanapali Royal twice, which is probably one time too many. I would say it fits the bill as the most standard Hawaii resort course, something AI could create with a few word prompts.
If you’re paying full freight, the green fees are the same as I just paid at Bandon. I’ll take Bandon as a much (emphasis) better value, despite a few sub par greens.
I think this specific golf course (combined with playing Links LS 1998) is what got me to start playing golf.
I was 14 years old the first time I ever went to Hawaii; we were staying in Kaanapali just north of this golf course. Every day we would travel down Honoapiilani Highway and the 5th tee starts next to the highway and doglegs left, ending just at the edge of the beach. I kept staring at that hole, I don’t think I had ever realized how big the scale of a golf hole was, I obviously didn’t capture that playing golf on the computer. I thought it was incredible that someone could hit two shots and reach the green. I was fixated on the golf course all week, I walked the resort streets next to the course and watched people hit shots.
On that trip I asked my Mom to sign me for a golf camp through my middle school. A few weeks later I was in the camp and I played golf almost every day that summer, the rest is history. Now I’m a middle aged, 9 hcp, posting on a golf message board. Royal Kaanapali brought me here.
Based on the question I don’t think you were trying to be comical in your response, but this is not Torrey Pines. I’m fairly confident it is National’s neighbor…Sebonack Golf Club.
I’m not itching to play it again but I certainly think I will. For me I really tried to take it for what it was worth and ignore all the construction thats taken place in the 60 years it was built lol. I was checking out the old pictures at the pro shop and seeing it in the 60’s with not a thing around but the Sheraton was so cool. It was sandy beach all the way to western edge of the course.
Also love the story. I had driven by it a bunch of times on prior trips as well and hole 5 intrigued me enough I had to see the rest of it lol.
I met Chris Berman at that course. I remember enjoying it at the time but I cannot recall a single golf hole now except whatever the long 4 is with the beach on the right side coming in. Maybe 5?
Yeah that’s 5. It’s funny you mentioned that because I noticed Chris berman signed a huge poster of himself at the Olowalu market and they put it in the window. I thought it was odd he traveled with it lmao.
Berman loves Hawaii and in particular Hawaii 5-0. I parked his car once (a beautiful black Chrysler 300) when I used to do valet parking at the Travelers and he has very real looking Hawaii license plate on the front of his car that just says “5-0”
Mayakoba El Camaleon. Great resort course but understand the disdain as a professional venue. They certainly are proud to be LIV hosts, with an entire shrine to LIV and not a single ounce of history of the PGA.
5 hour round was a tough scene, but still great views and fun day
My biggest let down for the trip was a co worker told me he had an extra spot at Kapalua so I lugged my clubs from Boston to Maui, to find out it was the resort course (plantation was upgrading tee boxes).
I hate Torrey Pines. It kind of looks like Torrey Pines to me? My bad, was just trying to be helpful. This is what happens when an idiot tries to be helpful.
