post of the year nominee
Is there merch?
Wellman GC, Iowa
Played my 1st sand green course and what a surprising delight. Regular greens it would have been driver-wedge-fest . But with the small sand greens creativity and the ground game were often the better option. $15 into the honesty box and I could have filled up a cooler and played all day.
Brisk but lovely out at the club this morning (30° when I got up). After coming so close and shooting 90 on the number 6 times last year, I broke 90 for the 3rd time this season. Shot an 89 with 3 three-putts, and making a mess of 3 of the par 5s. A triple and two doubles because of cold tops in the middle of the fairway. A few were left out there today. I did make my first birdie of the year on the other par 5.
Lucky enough to spend 3 days at Kiawah this week. 3 rounds at the Ocean Course and one scramble round on the River Course. I’m still processing my thoughts about it, but even if it isn’t always “fun” or my favorite course, there is definitely a place for the Ocean Course and it’s going to make other golf seem easy. Great times, beautiful views, fun caddies and some great shots.
PS - The River Course was awesome and the men’s lounge is a 10/10.
Love a 204yd downhill hole, playing 178 to the pin, into a headwind. GIR and a long 2 putt par. This game is easy
Atlantic City Country Club for the Spring Pro-Pro with Philadelphia PGA Section. Fantastic golf course all around; 11-18 might be the best stretch of holes I’ve ever played
That back nine does not disappoint, great views and pretty cool history. Lots of famous names in the locker room!
Got to play Spring Hill Golf Club today and it was as close to a perfect round of golf as you could ask for. Almost perfect weather, course was immaculate, had the whole course to ourselves for 12 holes, had one of the best rounds of my life, and won some money off a former Twins all-star (who is the nicest guy ever).
Played Hoylake yesterday in what felt like the first warm day we’ve had here in about five months!
I’ve played it a few times now and feel like it’s a course, like St Andrews, that grows on you each time. Played the back tees and really appreciated the strategy required (which I failed, going in a dozen or so bunkers).
Links golf on firm turf with a brisk, warm breeze is as good as it gets for me. Didn’t play well but struck a few beauties which is all I need.
Best holes for me are (members’, not Open routing): 1: terrifying opening tee shot (clubhouse left, driving range right) but rewards the brave golfer; 9 - driveable 4 downwind with a great punch bowl green; and 11, the most gorgeous par 3 with a great green complex.
The new par 3 played really well, they’ve removed the large bunker right so more playable for members and asks a stern but fair question of the golfer, which, again, I failed to answer.
The clubhouse is also one of the best and we put on a jacket and tie afterwards and played some snooker to cap off a fantastic experience.
Lots of US visitors and bumped into one with a NLU shoebag in the locker room and had a chat!
Chuck Knoblauch?
That looks significantly better than Denarau.
Haven’t played Denarau but based on the photos I’ve seen would agree 100%.
The part of the property across the road away from the ocean had some VERY provocative elevation change.
Overall, a really enjoyable round of golf and super impressive conditioning considering just how much rain they’d had over the previous week
!!!
What was the high run?
Good question! During the round, one of the group was saying how their highest break was 79. The best we managed was 9!!!
My good friend Gary Crow and I played the Old Course yesterday. We did not break 80 but it was the experience of a lifetime! I played great tee to green but did not make one putt. But it was 45 degrees, drizzling and the wind blew all day long from 10-25 mph. We felt like we were The Old Men and the Sea!
Had to fly straight to a couple days of customer meetings so a few days late, but last weekend I flew down to the dirty south and played a few rounds in Georgia and Tennessee.
No pics but I started off the weekend with a Refugee laden group (@tuck_mulligan, @scuff and Andre) at The Fields Golf Club South of Atlanta. A few conditioning issues on the greens coming out of winter but I can see why it’s a popular recommendation. Fantastic value and a cool course. Would play again.
Next day I played Sewanee - please check out the Sweetens thread for more info on the general length of the round😂
10/10 - loved the course
Then Monday was the main event - 36 holes at Lookout Mountain. Course has some bonkers greens/holes and a great setting on top of the world. They unfortunately had some issues with winterkill and rain that caused conditioning issues throughout a lot of the fairways. Would love to get back there when that gets fixed.
Greens were pristine though and made it through without any issues. They just need some more time to grow in and be a bit more receptive.
In the afternoon I got to check off another nest member meetup as @matthew823 and his partner ended up as one of the groups in our alt shot group.
All in all - great trip to kick off the golf season!
