Where did you play this week? (Part 2)

Home course Fennwood Hills. MGA Ryder cup event….always a great time.

Turkey Creek just outside Sacramento for some quota game action with @k-yan and @Jrod. 65 degree day on a quirky, interesting layout. Course #225 for me. Played like an absolute imbecile. A turkey, some might say.

Made a trip up to Aiken, SC this weekend with @dinonuggets to play Old Barnwell. We added on a second 18 for the day at Aiken GC. Probably one of the best 36 hole days I’ve ever had. Old Barnwell was incredible, but the wind blowing 20-30mph made it brutal. Can’t wait to get back in the fall and hopefully have some more favorable conditions. The caddie program there is a cool concept. Only one caddy was available for our round and we were lucky to have him on Kyle’s bag, really great kid.

Our host at Old Barnwell suggested that we try to play Cuscowilla at Lake Oconee for another round on the weekend. Cuscowilla is the only Coore and Crenshaw in Georgia and was incredibly fun. Not a bad hole on the course in my opinion. I could play this course every day and not get sick of it. Everyone we talked to in the proshop said that we played it about a month and a half early, so we’ll have to make the trip again at some point.

How does one organize a trip like this? Is it truly hosted? Do I need to find more friends in the southeast? Feel free to slide in my DM’s (anyone is welcome).

Quite the weekend. Haven’t played Cuscowilla since college. Need to try to get back down there.

Can’t complain about some February golf in Iowa.

Got out for a round at Sheringham Golf Club in England. A wonderfully fun sea-side links course.

As a bonus when I was grabbing some swag at the pro shop, the guy working said a member wanted to pass along some ball markers.

There are a bunch of old ball markers but I especially liked some of the ones from courses I have played in this and previous trips.

Now I just need to find time to get in another round somewhere else before heading home.

Just got back from a long weekend in Ft Lauderdale. I played Eagle Trace in Coral Springs. After 2 months of not picking up a club, it felt good to get back on the course. This was the first round I played after the passing of my Dad, so I decided to use his bag. It was cool just to see his bag on the back of a cart, the only bag he used since I was born.

It’s been a super fun two week stretch for me. Saw a handful of new courses and returned to a favorite.

Goose Creek - Jurupa Valley, CA

Fun course with immaculate conditioning.

Soule Park- Ojai, CA

A thinking golfer’s course. Really enjoyed it. Fantastic setting and the clubhouse/bar/grill area has to be one of the best in golf. It’s the center of this small mountain town and is a place I could easily hang out at all day every day.

Rustic Park - Moorpark, CA

Second time here. An absolute playground. You can play the ground game all day here, especially with your approach shots. Rewards creativity.

Wickenburg Country Club - Wickenburg, AZ

A super quirky course. Tight and takes driver out of your hands a lot. Lots of blind tee shots as well, so was playing a bit of a guessing game all round. It’s also only 6300 yards from the tips but has three par threes over 200 yards including two that are nearly 240 yards. Some fun green complexes though and was in unbelievable condition. Though I am born and raised in Phoenix, I’ve never really been out to the town of Wickenburg (about 80 minutes outside the city) so it was fun to see the old western town on top of playing a new course.

The more places I play though the more I realize it’s about the people you play with more than the locations you play at. All of these rounds were played with people I have met through the Refuge and I couldn’t be more grateful for this community.

Does the first hole at Wick CC still have a palm tree in front of the green or did they get rid of that amazing bit of quirk?

This is the first tee shot. Looks like no palm tree. Where was it?

Hmm, looks like maybe they have switched the nines as well. Based on metadate I haven’t been to WCC since 2017 (TBH I am not driving all the way to Wickenburg to play there again).

Back then the first tee was right out front of the club house. Short hole, drive downhill, wedge back up to a green with a severe tier in it. If the green was on the right side the only real concern was the bunker in front. But if the hole was on the left tier you has to negotiate the palm tree right in front of the green. After an hour’s drive to get to the course it was a pretty rude way to start, but in retrospect it was a pretty sick feature. Sad if it is no longer.

I was wrong. Photo is hole two. I remember one now though there is no tree to my recollection.

So I’ve only played Papago once and accidentally teed off at the wrong green on that hole, my playing partners decided to take a video rather than correct me. Hole looks different without the bunker.

This is incredible. I’m not entirely sure of your thought process to come to that conclusion but I hope it was influenced by alcohol. Did you shoot it with a rangefinder? What did you make?

So alcohol definitely played a factor as this was the last golf round of a bachelor party. And I personally didn’t gun the flag, just played the number someone else got. They obviously shot the right pin which was much closer. I was so perplexed after hitting what I thought was a good shot and watching it splash 30 yards short of the bank until I turned and saw the actual green, then I felt like a dummy lol. Almost made a mega 4 after dropping, but had to settle for double.
