“Oh Lord. Stuck in Lodi again.”

Got out yesterday to #compete at cute lil Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi, CA, hard on the wine grape vineyards. Fun little track, designed by a couple dudes I’ve never heard of, $48 to walk on a Saturday morning and course was in great shape.
@k-yan and I had our round of 32 match in the RACDG NORCAL match play comp and 18 holes wasn’t enough. We go to a rematch.
5 birdies and my first under par round of the year wasn’t enough to hold off my worthy adversary.
I’m unemployed at the moment, so I’ve been playing a lot of golf while job hunting. I can only spend so much time on the job boards, and the weather has been mostly good.
In the last three days I experienced both ends of the spectrum for spring golf in the DC area. Last week I played East Potomac three times. I love EPGL and have played it a ton. It is, however, a swamp. After a lot of rain last week, including a decent amount on Saturday, it was a mess on Sunday. A group of us from the roost had the first tee time (7:30 am) the morning of the time change. And it was blowing 35+ mph by the end of the round. We had a surprisingly good time, given the conditions, but it was an adventure.
In this one you can see how high the water was in the Potomac during high tide. We saw an intelligent person in an SUV try to navigate this road while we were on the 5th tee. They had to back out.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, yesterday I finally made it out to Whiskey Creek with a different group of roost folks. It was little windy, but otherwise a spectacular weather day. It’s a course I’ve been hearing about since I moved up here in 2019, for two reasons: It costs $150+ on weekends in season (which is insane) and it has a stone ruin/building in the middle of the 18th fairway. The building is controversial among the locals.
As our strongest building hater, @sjdowne was live streaming the tee shots on 18 to our whats app group. I was trying to hit the building and just missed it left. Then I hit 3w into the bunker before making a 3-putt bogey. It was that kind of day.
It was $70 yesterday and it was in incredible shape. With the elevation and good conditioning, it’s possibly the most beautiful course I’ve played in the area, even though it wasn’t the most interesting. Between no flat lies anywhere on the course, the wind, and the speed of the greens, I didn’t play well, but I’m glad I finally got to check it out without paying $150. Because, no.
I like Whispering Woods for a place to knock off the rust. It’s one of many overlooked, affordable options down here in the pines. Someone rolling into town to play #2 and other high dollar options, without a clue how to play off these hard, tight lies, might do well to first plug in WW, or Hyland, or even Midlands CC to get an idea of Moore County golf.
Not that Whispering Woods, @Harper.
Oh, I apologize good sir.
All good. I run into your WW fairly often when looking at NCRDB and some other sites. ![]()
Good to know it’s not a terrible course. Maybe I’ll play it around Easter.
Classic Club - Palm Desert 3/14
Windy afternoon but managed to dodge it for most of the round, greens had been topdressed yesterday morning. They needed it, lots of ball marks and scufs on the greens.
First day of the handicap season here in Illinois. Tied my personal best and weather was absolutely perfect.
Last few weeks in Orlando and Charleston, both times traveling with a group so course selection was of the budget-friendly variety.
Orlando:
White Heron
Highlands Reserve
Providence
Stonegate
Falcon’s Fire
Charleston:
Wild Dunes - Harbor
Hell yeah Karl!
So good. Was my favorite course when I lived in Erie. Remember playing it one last time the day before I moved back to the Midwest.
Played the Nicklaus course at Carlton Woods, the newer host of the Dinah Shore. The tournament is little under a month away which means the conditions are nearly peak and also the course is playing super hard. Definitely some fun holes but also some total asskickers, overall probably not the most fun course for normal people but decent tournament course
