Where did you play this week? (Part 2)

Played El Camaleon Mayakoba and Gran Coyote Golf last week down on vacation. Both were in outstanding shape. Very narrow fairways on Mayakoba with the LIV event a couple weeks away. The real gem was the Rahm/Shark photo hanging in the clubhouse

First round of the year back at The Park. Not the result I wanted and windy as hell, but such a great addition to FL golf. If there is a down side, everyone is starting to figure out how good it is and tee times are getting tough. Small price to pay. This is the par 3, 11th.

Hillsdale Golf Club today in Tommyladland. Only group that ventured out in this forecast

Ended up being a lovely day where the wind was only 30ish mph.

Spent a few days in the Bay Area this week.

Thursday: Poppy Hills (Monterey, CA)

My last name is pronounced liked Poppy so this one has always been on my list to check off. Couldn’t have asked for a better day to experience it. The weather cooperated after the forecast was a bit ominous all week. I’m guessing it scared some people away as there were only five groups on the tee sheet all day. It isn’t a course that’ll beat you up too bad as the fairways are generous, though if you miss them then your punch out game better be on point. I’m not sure that I would pay the public $325 sticker price but it’s a great deal for Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) members and their guests. Though it’s in Monterey, there aren’t really any ocean views (one or two views from afar on a couple holes) but it’s a fun walk through the trees.

Friday: Corica Park (South) (Alameda, CA)

I had heard great things about this place so was excited to check it out. It’s a fun Aussie sand belt inspired design that makes you think your way around the course to use the best angles. While this course is designed to be able to use the ground game, the rain the Bay had gotten that week made it play pretty wet and soft. I would love another trip around here in firmer conditions. We were supposed to play the North course’s nine holes as well, but got rained out. I will absolutely return once the other nine is finished and play all 36 one day, hopefully in drier conditions.

Saturday: Rooster Run (Petaluma, CA)

It had poured the afternoon and evening before and I think this may have been the wettest golf course I have ever played. Borderline at best if I should have been out there but we survived. It’s a fun local course. Some holes felt repeatable but it was an enjoyable walk and the staff couldn’t have been more neighborly. They know what they are and seem to treat the players well. I’m not a GCA guy so who knows if it’s technically a great course, but if I lived by that course I’d be thrilled to have it as my everyday course.

Sorry, your name is pronounced Pop. Those are the rules.

Funny enough, I’ve played Rooster Run too!

Smh did the latest Trap Draw teach you nothing? Gotta listen back to the brief discussion of the new Columbia football head coach for a primer on my name (they hired Jonathan Poppe). Small world re: Rooster!

Caught up on the main pod? Not a chance. Caught up on the Trap Draw? Always.

I’m so behind on every pod I listen to.

I live across town from Rooster. Some of the wettest rounds I’ve ever had have been out there this winter. Course doesn’t drain haha

My friend that I played with lives in Novato so he plays Rooster the most and said the same thing. It’s always wet, just even more so after a good rain. The Tour would be playing lift, clean, and place every round there.

Huntercombe today. This is the track that put Willie Park Jnr into bankruptcy at the same time he built Sunningdale. Thank god it survived because it is magnificent.

Where’s it located?

So, I was in NC this week for work and ended up having a free day. Wasn’t sure where I was going to play, but @Joezwickl put me in touch with his connect at Mid Pines. Ended up playing 36 today for the price of a meal at Applebees. It was an absolute all timer of a day. Shoutout to @Fluff for joining me for the second loop and being an awesome guy to share a round with. Mid pines is a special place… 10/10 would recommend.

Update: the day has taken a turn and my GD hotel is on fire

Edit: Sounds like it was a small fire that the FD handled pretty quickly. Still able to stay here apparently. And my clubs didn’t get melted! (Although that might not be what I tell the insurance company). What a day…
