I’d like to read or hear someone’s deep dive on Yoshinoya. Weird, ubiquitous beef bowl chain that’s all over LA but every location seems constantly empty. We used to have a theory that it was a big money laundering cover.
It’s not weird. It’s a Japanese chain, wildly popular in Japan, and it’s fricking delicious. I lived above one in Osaka, and finished off a night of drinking about 3 times a week with a couple of beers and a bowl of gyudon alongside drunken salarymen doing the same.
No Del Taco shoutout?
Makes sense. But in LA they’re run down looking and empty but on seemingly every other corner.
I really really really enjoy LA Confidential. I’ve seen it a billion times and I love watching it.
Ps…Pierce Patchett had an awful chipping motion.
Does The Big Lebowski count as a LA movie?
Also worth mentioning are The Player, Swingers, Boogie Nights, and Boyz N the Hood.
Maybe back when they were truly local and called Naugles. I can get DT in Denver now…
Very much so. Ralph’s, Hollywood Star Lanes…that place brings me right back to that time in L.A., much as Swingers does.
And definitely Boogie Nights, which does a better job evoking a specific place and time than any 90s movie outside of maybe Goodfellas. I’m a big Magnolia fan, but Boogie Nights would be my #1 PTA Los Angeles movie.
Another interesting pod, per usual, from @Tron and @Randy. They have really stepped up the trapdraw over the past year. Never been to LA but as others have posted the pod makes me want to get out there and check it out.
It would be have been awesome to hear more about earthquakes and how the region would fare if the big/moderate quake hit the region.
I can tell who a true California native is for people over 40 if they know what Naugles is. Taco Burger baby.
The family is bringing them back - there is a Naugle’s test kitchen in Fountain Valley on Ellis (across from the water treatment facility - not ideal) and they are trying to recreate the menu through trial and error.
I’m all in on a Naugles reboot.
I’m under 40 and don’t remember Naugles but learned about it through the reboot.
If i remember correctly they talk to the naugles people in the american taco episode in season 2 of the taco chronicles on Netflix. Looks V enjoyable
Besides Zankou, Pollo A La Brasa a Peruvian chicken joint in Koreatown and in Gardena is my favorite.
Also, must shout out the Korean fried chicken places all over LA and down in OC. The bigger chains like Kyochon and Bonchon are ok but I prefer Koko in Buena Park, Garden Grove and La Palma.
@Lazstradamus for the win with Five Guys over I&O
Five Guys and In-n-Out are not even the same category of dining.
In-n-Out is a fast food restaurant, most all with drive-through lanes, where a full meal costs around 8 bucks. Your burger alone will cost you that at Five Guys, which has no drive through. Add another 6 bucks or so for your fries and drink.
In an apples to apples comparison, Five Guys can’t hold Shake Shack’s jock. Spoiler: Five Guys does not season its meat. That’s right, you love Five Guys? You love a bland, unsalted, hamburger with a slice of unmelted American cheese slapped on at the very end. High quality shit there.
Tasty fries, though.
Their fries are ass. Too soft & soggy.
Based on personal preferences, it is rare for people to recommend the fries and burgers from the same place. Wild.
Wendy’s.
