Trap Draw: Chicago

At least tag him you coward! @Randy your ethics are getting besmirched by the C-Suite…

Entertaining discussion, well done fellas. Some of my personal highlights:

Of course “Trust Fund @Tron” was born in Wilmette. Of course.

The deep dish pizza take was alarmingly bad, but at least JB did go all in on encased meats.

Randy’s comments about decompressing on the train was spot on. I used to literally fall asleep on my 35 minute L ride home when we lived in the city, and could just naturally wake up just in time (at least most of the time  ). Was so relaxing and you could truly disconnect after work. This was also when blackberries were a thing, but the internet was so spotty it didn’t make sense to just read your phone the whole ride. It was definitely an adjustment when we moved away and I had a car ride home from work instead.

Finally, with some of the bar lists above, I’d throw Guthrie’s (RIP ) into the mix as well for best bar in the city.

Very solid burger for sure.

Re: taquerias. La Chaparrita is the best of the bunch.

Best taquerias are any attached or inside a Mexican grocery store. Bonus points if they don’t understand your order cause whatever they give you is still amazing.

My heart sank when I saw Guthrie’s was going under. What a great spot. Hopefully it sees a second life.

No Bavettes? Interesting…

Don’t get me wrong: Bavette’s is outstanding. But I just feel Maple & Ash is on another level. Their beef butter (butter, beef stock, bone marrow blend) seals the deal for me.

The downstairs area of Bavette’s is sexy AF. Great spot if you’re trying to seal a different kind of deal

Guthrie’s is/was fantastic.

The best nights were when you’re engaged in a 5 hour Risk marathon, 10 beers in and the Tamale Guy shows up to save the day.

Fucking EPIC.

I was a engineer at this building for over a year. Awesome to look at, total shit show behind the scenes. They did not do a great job with the mechanicals in it. One really cool thing though is there’s 160,000 gallons of water at the top that serves as part of the fire suppression system and also to counter balance the weight, like ballast on a ship.

Need a “Best Summertime Patio” spot in addition to what’s above.

If a rooftop patio works not much better view than from cindys rooftop. Kaiser tiger for winter activities. Curling on their patio tons of fun.

Bavettes is hands down the best steak house in Chicago. Ate downstairs there and it was just ideal all around.

I’ve been to Publican twice and will never go back. Second time it took 45 minutes to get our food after appetizers, which was mediocre.

Best burger is Red Hot Ranch. I’ll fight you if you disagree.

The best experience I’ve had was at EL Ideas. It was more art than food. Such a cool vibe in that place.

Pizza take was garbage.

Deep dish is a delight, 3-4 times a year only. Chicago tavern style pizza is a fantastic pizza.

Speaking of which, this is awesome.

I second this take. Bavette’s is fantastic and doesn’t hurt that they have an elite chocolate cream pie on the menu, but Maple & Ash doesn’t have any holes in its game.

Does this appear to be Chicago tavern style?

Looks like Cincinnati.

Exactly. The great thing about Chicago pizza is that it’s not just deep dish everywhere. The places that do a great deep dish are fantastic, but I will also gladly celebrate a good thin crust with square slices all day long.
