Trap Draw: Atlanta

I can’t emphasize this point enough. Other than a couple isolated instances I never realized that being able to fly pretty much anywhere in the world direct wasn’t a normal thing. It’s such an efficient airport, great amenities (esp now with new international terminal), and MARTA drops you off right there. Plus Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms always welcomes you.

Woof. That place is a shithole.

St. Simon’s or bust (if we’re strictly talking GA beaches).

Location-wise, we have it pretty good in Dallas for both personal and work travel. DFW is fairly central to the entire 'plex, so it’s an accessible hub for a really wide population radius, but it still isn’t too far from Dallas proper (especially with the new super fast toll lane on 635), and Love Field, the goat, is in the middle of the city, less than 10 minutes from downtown.

You’re right, most of the big cities can be a beat down, but I still have nightmares trying to make flights in and out of ATL for work trips like a decade ago, unlike any experiences I’ve had with NY, LA, or SFO, etc. ATL is probably great for locals, but a lot of hate may come from bad connection experiences in such a massive, crowded airport in the same way I think DFW is fine, but people outside of Dallas may hate it.

Not sure if minneapolis and st paul are big enough cities to be in this convo but you dropped in Denver so i thought it might work. MPLS is pretty centrally located near both cities. Its pretty great

Can we talk about barbeque? Because all my life I mostly thought other than Fat Matt’s you had to get out of Atlanta for good bbq. Sprayberrys in Newnan has been well-respected since at least the 80’s. Columbus is a great bbq city. Up here in Canton/Woodstock I take guests to Williamson Bros or to JD’s.

What are the top BBQ spots in the city? And don’t come back at me with Dreamland in Alpharetta because it’s distant 3rd among Dreamland’s I’ve been too. I would have accepted Swallow at the Hollow in Roswell, but it closed a couple of years ago.

Strong agree here. Looking at the list of busiest airports in the US, I don’t think you have one that is close to a city center till Vegas, CLT or PHX. The cost of having a big airport that gets you everywhere is putting it in a place that’s going to be inconvenient for some.

Heirloom.

'Cue in Alpharetta, Cumming, or Norcross is good.

I would second Williamson Bros.

Hmmm. Down by Ray’s on the River? I’ll have to check it out. I used to work down at Wildwood when I worked for Coca-Cola-- until they moved us downtown.

Hey… 2010’s The Last Song featuring Miley Cyrus was filmed there

i was in ATL a few years back for the UNC vs UGA kickoff classic game…we stopped at twin smokers downtown and enjoyed it

place seemed to have a good vibe to it and the bbq was good IMO

@6thFairway Heirloom is great and closer to you, right off 75. Community in Decatur is solid too.

@GluteActivator Vegas was the first that came to mind, helps being in the middle of the desert. I guess Reagan in DC counts too but that place… yikes.

@Taylorda good callout, never been there or flown through but certainly counts.

I guess my larger point is… airports that are even remotely convenient are far & away the exception, not the rule.

There was a national BBQ tournament a few years ago done by thrillist, and Heirloom was the only Atlanta based spot on that bracket.

You are using thrillist as a food reference… Do you also use yelp as a way to find restaurants?

Lol no but I’m just saying that speaks to how good Heirloom is. Plus, If you don’t go early enough, chances are there won’t be any food left.

I’m also an advocate of Das BBQ in the collier heights area. Really good and they give you Miller high life while you wait

Is B’s Cracklin’ BBQ back open? Had heard nothing but great things pre-fire.

Also. Taqueria del Sol has the best tacos in the city. I will not be taking questions at this time.

You see the jon favreau food show yet? There’s an episode about marvel and Atlanta. They do some at the optimist in west mid.

Also shoutout to Ford Fry. Favorite restauranteur in Atlanta. Owns my favorite spot, Beetlecat. Which has the dopest lobster rolls, only rivaled by high roller in Portland me

They aren’t bad, but not my favorite.
