Theres three main cities in the southeast: Nashville, Atlanta, and Charlotte. I would say Atlanta is probably the epicenter for a few reasons… The airport, the amount of corporations based here, and its the largest if you include surrounding suburban areas.
With that said, it’s a great city. Always events here. GREAT bbq. Really diverse pockets within the city. Tolerant. Some really great tourism here with the movie industry being so prevalent, civil rights history museum, and the aquarium. Also don’t sleep on the high museum.
And it’s also within spitting distance of CLT, Nash, HH, Jacksonville, Tybee, etc.
Airport is the best, can get you anywhere you want in the world at a pretty decent price.
Love Tron mentioning Ryan Klesko in the pre-mea culpa. I went all in as a Klesko fan just because everybody worshipped Chipper. A few of my dad’s buddies went hunting with Klesko when I was around 10 and brought home a game-used bat for me. Rather obscure baseball artifact I have.
I DM’d Spencer a couple weeks back hoping to convince him to go on the TrapDraw. I was stoked when I saw his reply. Been counting the days on this one!
Also I am only 20 mins into the podcast, and they are still in the battle between Publix and Kroger… but do they do a deep dive into the brewery scene?
Like Charlotte and Asheville are always identified as the best brewery towns in the south, and rightfully so, but Atlanta + Athens has a sneaky good scene…
Creature Comforts
Monday Night
Orpheus
Terrapin
Sweetwater
All great.
Actually fun story… Creature Comforts is so good, that the Russo brothers… while directing infinity war and endgame had tropicalia at an atl restaurant. Loved it so much that they tried to buy the creature comforts brewery. The owner wouldn’t sell but then allowed them to use it all over Endgame, which is why Thor is specifically getting drunk off of creature comforts.
this upsets me so much because they still don’t have a taproom in Atlanta, and driving an hour to pick up some of their limited releases is an absolute annoyance.
I kind of forget that when I went on a tour of Sweetwater 5 years or so ago we “bought” the tour and got sample tickets that we exchanged for beer. So bizarre.
i miss the ticketing system TBH. felt way more cost effective. you were more likely to get 6, half pours (3 beers) for $10 versus paying full freight, $6/beer now.
Yup. Sure, RDU is clean and easy to get through security. But I have to connect through ATL or CLT to get anywhere international or on the west coast for a reasonable price. I’d rather take 45 minutes to get through security than worry about a connection / sit in a terminal for 5 hours in between flights.
Came back from a Vegas spring break trip in college with $7 in my bank account. Still was able to get home, shouts out MARTA
Shout out Kasim Reed - every single one of his high ranking staffers is currently in jail for the mega corruption but he was never even charged. He’s basically a smart version of Kwame Kirkpatrick.
You can probably go ahead and slot Raleigh and Nashville in there ahead of Atlanta. Bearded Iris and Southern Grist alone make them one of the top brewery cities in the south. And then Raleigh where do I even start: Burial, Barrel Culture, Funguys, Crank Arm etc etc
