OKRs were the bane of my existence, but similar to some classes in high school (i.e. AP government and econ to name a couple), you realize how useful shit is after 1-2 years of not being forced to do it or learn it. For all its faults, Google has some really really dialed #process, and some of it has served as a nice template for me at NLU…On the flip side, I think there is such a thing as too much process: Logging too much shit in too many systems, which leads to less efficiency. There was a lot of that going on at Google as well.
For me, running is my stress release. When I start to get stressed and irritable my wife will look me in the eyes and say “Go for a run now.” I typically go on the same loop because it allows me to completely zone out and not get lost. I also know in the back of my mind how much further to go on difficult runs and I can “trick” myself into running faster to get it done sooner. It would probably help my mental toughness if I was forced to run for a full hour. This is going to be hard, but I think it’ll be a good goal.
Awesome ‘pool’ scene? The rest of the movie is a massive, corny snooze?
We must be talking about Once Upon A Time In Hollywood right?
Have you looked into arccos (no free adds)? Once you get used to it the app does 90% of the work. I get so much data at the end of a round. It also just started calculating strokes gained. Good stuff.
I have not. I love the idea of it, but it feels like the 201/301 class. it need to establish the habit first!
Thanks for leading off! Something about writing stuff down and sharing (even if to strangers) that introduces an extra element of accountability.
2021 Goals
Exercise:
- Consistent exercise routine (including golf, #pushcartmafia);
- Run 1,000 miles for year;
- Peloton 1,500 miles for year
General/Mental health:
- Continue sobriety (sober gui almost 8 years and this is always #1 priority for me as without it, nothing else on the list is possible);
- Meditate and journal every morning;
- Be present for my wife and twins; i.e. less screen time (and yes, I understand the irony of that one as I am typing this on my computer to share with an internet message board, but progress, not perfection!).
- Less isolation, more outreach to people when the world allows it
Golf:
- Get handicap back into sing digits (currently 10.5);
- Practice short game and putting;
- Get out with my wife and twins once a month (during warm weather);
- Avoid getting hangry on the course and being a whiny nincompoop
I have long disagreed with @djpie about Once Upon A Time in Hollywood (it was a lot of fun scenes, with zero narrative or plot to create…you know, an actual movie) but I agree with him on Color of Money. (Part of it was that I was so high when I saw it I got the plot wrong, and then couldn’t get back on track … but later saw it again and decided I still thought it was meh.)
Black Hawk Down is a good movie. One of my close friends is a fairly notable film critic and called it “war-nography” and I can’t shake it when it’s back on the set.
Another nebulous one, but I really want to laugh more in 2021.I really noticed that social distancing resulted in less laughter…you still connect with friends as you can, but you’re less likely to end up in that situation where everyone just gets the giggles and can’t stop. Part of this might be more present (ie watching a comedy and not doom-scrolling at the same time) but mostly it’s about connecting with people in meaningful ways, even if face to face can’t happen until we’re all vaccinated…
I’ll bite on this one, inspiring pod.
Health :
- I’ve always said I wanted to be physically fit on my 40th, which is approx. 13 months from now. Lean down, tone up. I’ll know it when I see it.
Golf :
- Play 10 courses i’ve never played before. I played like 11 new courses this year, makes this goal tough.
General/Mental
- Shoot the shit with my Mom and Sister more.
- Cliche, read at least 10 books. This might seem low to most but I have read no more than 1-2 the past few years.
Cheers to the process.
This hits very close to home, Phegs
Uh ohhhhh. IRENE!!! This is happening.
@soly any recommendations for stretching apps? I need to get into stretching more…that was a good goal. I’m not limber and turning 40 later this year.
Man this is super cool, I live in East Village and have also been using daily walks as a way to get out of my apartment. I haven’t walked nearly as much as you but have seen probably everything from West Hillhurst down along the Bow and over to Ramsay. Funny enough I’ve also come to notice some of the old apartment names.
Here’s some of my photos from those walks
I’m in for suggestions as well. Turned 40 last summer and while I’m still in good shape from all the running, my mobility is way off. At this point I think tying my shoes is more strenuous than the run!
Probably in my top 5 movie wise of all time.
I used the Precision Pro app today to track score/stats and was pretty impressed. Courses aren’t loaded in the app, which is fine, so you can’t use it for GPS (it’s why I have a rangefinder), but everything else seemed easy and it’s also in Beta. Will be cool to see what the Alpha version is
Peloton has a ton of great stretching classes. I think the app will cost money on its own after a bit but you can get free trials etc and use it without the bike. Lots of warmup, post ride/run stretches and then just a bunch of daily focused stretches (including using foam rollers if that’s your jam).
For me - the most rewatchable
