Tourist Sauce: The Carolinas

Good for the soul that episode, but has me longing for more normal times.

I’ve never played Tobacco Road and really don’t know that much about it. But that debate reminded me of a hole at one of the courses by my house. Short par 4, mega elevated tee box, pond right in the average golfers landing area. The whole go for it vs. lay up debate right in your face. What’s the smart play? Long iron short of the pond, short iron on the green, 2 putt for par. The whole round I’ll try and talk myself into pulling iron out on that tee box but then I get up there and it’s driver 100% of the time. Cause that feeling of driving it over the pond and having a 50 yard wedge into the green is what I came for, and whether I shoot 85 or 88 doesn’t make a difference. Maybe that’s because I’m a mid teens handicap. Maybe I’d look at it different if I had the chance to break par every round. But that’s what golf is about, every course offers golfers of different skill levels different decisions and challenges.

Sorry for the rant but Hubers game and @Joezwickl cooking got me feeling all emotional. Great frickin episode

Again… I’d rather shoot 70 than 72. Pulling off a low percentage shot really doesn’t do much for me. I’ll still try it now and then - in total goof-around rounds, match play with partners where my partner is safe, etc. - but meh.

I’ve played TR twice. In both rounds, my differential was below my index (and I won a fair amount of cash the second time). That’s satisfying to me. I enjoy choosing the right shot and then executing that shot. At TR, the “right shot” is often kinda boring. The targets are wide unless you “go for” all kinds of what are usually the “wrong” shot.

Golf is “about” different things to different people. Some people just like to drink beer and play with their guis. Some guys are making a living from it. Some just want to shoot a good score. Some want to pull off one hero shot a round. To each their own.

All that said I am looking forward to next week’s episode. The guys, like most, really like TR. I like Caledonia much more than TR. Caledonia is, to me, a better test of golf. A better golf course.

I love Caledonia, I used to frequent a Myrtle Beach Golf message board and there were a few members of Caledonia/True Blue and the consensus among them was that True Blue was the course they preferred playing after a few months. Caledonia was the favorite going in, but after a number of rounds True Blue became the preference.

I like them both more than TR.

Man, was that episode any good? Took me right back to my round on #2 last summer, just a couple weeks before the US Am. Place was FIERY. Soly hit the nail on the head when he said “I’ve never had more fun on a golf course that I’ve struggled at”

I’ve never felt more mentally drained after a casual round, and I say that as the highest compliment. Might be my favorite course.

Hey @Joezwickl, where did you work in Manhattan? I just moved to N.C. from Manhattan and my gf worked in the industry in Manhattan.

This episode at #2 has to be my favorite. You could see the pure joy in playing arguably the best course in America. I felt the same way when it battered me for 5 hours and couldn’t have enjoyed it more! Went for my 40th with my best friend and had the time of our lives there. Can’t wait to get back someday.

This was my favorite episode of the season by far. Great job capturing a special course, you really understand the playability of the course off the tee and the absolute hellfire around the greens. Then the meal at the end was just the best.

The interview at the beginning really hit home for me. “If you play the right tees, it’s a lot of fun but if you’re hitting fairway woods into every green it’s the worst day of your life”. I played #2 last year for the only time, played from the blues as a 12 index because I had a bet with friends from home I’d break 100 and I didn’t come close. My long irons/fairway woods completely deserted me, and I got ejected by multiple greens (not 3 or 5 though). When I play it next I’ll either do the whites or the combos and have a blast. I can’t wait to play it again (and again).

The thing about #2- the great thing about it- is that all those short game shots are so fun. I mean, they are incredibly difficult but they are fun. Last June I missed the 1st green right. Took a bad hop and there’s a mound between me and the green. The green is on a mound, too. So I can chip, which means I have to fly the mound, land it on the upslope of the green, and roll up from there. Or I can putt over a mound, down, and back up. Or I can bump and run. And that’s just the first hole. I blew it. I chipped too hard, over the back. But I still think about that shot and how rare it is on courses I play.
