TC and Big needed to use the match index (if there was one) on the scorecard so that the shots are evenly spread.
It helps that a) they’ve spent time with him and b) Mike is one of the best guys you’ll ever spend time with. That’s not true of all Traverse City Michigan based architects.
I hate that the conditions were where they were for Cape Wickham. I played the most amazing day there which unearthed the best course flow I have ever played. So much so, that after playing 36 holes, we had to head back out and play the back 5 holes again!
The movement from green to tee is incredibly natural, and is absolutely my differentiating factor between the two courses. It is not the #1 course in Australia, but it is absolutely top 5 and anyone would do very well to add it into their next Australian golf adventure.
Shout out Mrs Piehowski for Road to Gundagai as the closing track!
I played them both on back to back days in 2021. Wickham first in light rain for the whole of the front 9. Ocean Dunes the next day in sunshine. Both days probably an average 2 club wind into and 1 club with.
Ocean Dunes has some spectacular scenery and on our day a more friendly set of people in the pro shop. But it’s a Doak 6. Wickham is a 9. I’d play Wickham 7 times in a 10 round split. Ocean dunes I’d spend my time collecting balls (carefully) from the rough to use at Wickham.
The rhythm, the ebbs and flows, the thrills of that 9-10-11-12 stretch and then you turn and play the last 6 holes towards and in the shadow of the lighthouse. it is a symphony in 18 parts. Transcendent experience.
Not sure all the credit goes to Mike, at least if you read Darius’s account of how it got finished. Another story.
Loved that. Brought back memories that’s for sure.
Mention of the royal flying doctors service also brought back this TV show and it’s awesome theme music.
@justine @djpie will there be a Tourist Sauce Australia playlist on Spotify? Been loving the Scandinavia playlist.
Agree with all of that. Except 16 is one of the worst hole on the planet. Truly abhorrent. The ballyhooed finishing stretch didn’t quite do it for me (though I really liked 15 and could see it being dynamic AF in the usual wind.
Also @Crankyscott we covered the design credit kerfuffle in the episode.
Lastly, would like to applaud @justine for the musical selections in this episode. Elite stuff!
All we want for Christmas is a new TS Spotify playlist
Are we getting a behind the scenes vid this week? Or are we left with the double feature to satiate us?
Seeing @justine has artwork from In The Court of the Crimson King as her avatar makes tons of sense - great album and some great music choices in this season!
She just released a double album!
And we’re all Down Bad because of it.
Speaking of the music choices -
Would love an instrumental version (no voiceover) of the montage of the course and scenery that starts around 12:45. The song and the camera shaking because of the wind makes you feel like an epic battle against nature is about to go down.
Loved the last 70 minutes of this episode. Absolutely has shot to the top of my list. With the ease of travel from HNL to AUS my wife and I are pretty set on a trip there this year.
Went looking at Ocean Dunes and found their Stay and Play. I really don’t think there is a better value in golf than this (prices AUS. 724 USD)
been a busyish day so I am sorry if i missed the note or video but wheres the behind the scenes video
That’s really not that bad at all.
