Still feel the same…links golf is generally easier for higher handicaps relative to lower handicaps. Firm ground makes it harder to get the ball close to the hole, which raises the average score of low handicappers more than high handicappers because of how often each hits the ball close to the hole on softer courses. Also, links courses don’t force a wedge into your hand around the greens all the time, which is generally a benefit to high handicappers.
The episode is out, so the fact that I can’ buy this t-shirt for Black Friday is disgraceful. @MerchCzar, what are we even doing here?
This is a never end conundrum for me. I LOVE the ground game. Love running it up onto the green. Love bump and run. Love knockdown shots.
But over here courses don’t call for it, demand it and are less receptive to it. Therefore, I practice it less.
Then head overseas and play that game and while it’s the right shot, and one I love, generally less comfortable with it and struggle mightily with distance control.
Then I think about pulling the wedge off firm and tight turf to a firm green…when it’s just not the play.
HIGH CAP BURDEN!!!
Playing a few weeks ago with @Gdasilva11 I did this from 140 out, clubbed up and hit a punch draw into a green off a sidehill lie. Just felt like it. Perfect shot execution, wrong hole and wrong course to do it on. Doesn’t run out like it “should” and ends up 2 feet from his ball, short-sided in the rough with a bunker to manage. He hit a stock wedge, from a tough lie in the rough (I was in the fairway). As my ball is in the air, he goes something like “look at that, Ireland”.
Who else here is dying to go play links with @Clarkebar?
He seems like he should be living in Ireland and coming over for visits stateside.
So when does “No Nay Never (Laying Up)” become the new podcast outro?
Also, for the record, neither of us managed to get up and down.
Before Tron said the same thing, I thought that just from the look of this course it would be the one that I would play every day instead of getting my dick kicked in by Ballybunion, Carne, etc. This looks like so much fun to obsess over
Apologies for the bad cropping but so funny to see Roscommon on a golf related map.
Also that West of Ireland Championship Roll of honour is, I hope I’m using this right, a murderers row if you will.
Sad that Enniscrone is the finale but still excited for next week already
Probably should mention that Ken the architect in the vid is Roscommon native too. Really cool seeing his name up there with the greats
If a 15 is called a high handicap, how do we call a 30? Asking for a friend…
I consider SUPERSTAR players to consistently hold a sub 5 index. GREAT players to consistently hold single digit, GOOD players to hold 10-18, anything above an 18 index I wouldn’t call high, but it’s getting there.
All this is great, but mind you, scratch is shit.
compared to a pro, yes. Compared to the other 99% of the world, it’s awe-inspiring.
I found on my trip this summer that the high handicapper struggled the most of our group. Between the wind and the bunkers he just really had his ass handed to him.
Every episode has me googling flights…
my buddy Carl texts me every week when the Tourist Sauce drops. fire emoji we need to plan an Ireland trip. EVERY week.
Rivals the Sunnehanna Amateur. I’ll hang up and listen now
Carr family were absolute buzzsaws
My first time at bandon, while fun with people I was with, involved terrible scores and feeling of powerlessness. Bunker to bunker. Couldn’t get out. Couldn’t stay out. Ate so much sand. Wind pushed ball everywhere. Didn’t know how to keep it under wind. I still have nightmares about pac 1 and constantly getting stuck in the huge dune on the right.
Trails 2. Huge mountain of sand on right.
I think you get the idea.
