If you had a new girlfriend that asked you start sitting in on important business meetings and speaking for her on her behalf in intimate discussions with her closest friends, you’d feel absolved of all responsibility just because she asked you to? Takes two to tango. She could’ve told him to handle his own business like a grownup.
My main takeaway was that they seemed like a group of really close friends who really enjoyed jamming and playing together but were also really sick of each other in a professional sense. They look happy when they are banging out covers and messing around and they all instantly get miserable soon as they have to collaborate and actually “work.” As a more casual fan who was sold on the “they hated each other at the end” myth it was eye opening.
The Yoko of it all was my favourite. She just managed to be the worst presence. And we’ve all had that friend who would bring their annoying significant other around at the absolute worst time
She could’ve let him do his thing but he’s John Lennon, I bet he was hard to say no to. I’m sure the truth is some combination of blame regarding her being around. Also I forgot about how she was talking for John in the meetings with George so that’s not a good look. But I just brought it up because I think the average person (maybe not average Beatles fan?) still thinks it’s Yoko’s fault for everything when it’s more nuanced than that.
Did you go see the Yoko exhibit at the art gallery? It really reinforced her perspective on what she was bringing to the table.
No, I wish I had!
Made that anvil his instrument during Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
Keep in mind too that she and John were roasting their brains with LSD and heroin regularly so it’s not as if there was a lot of rational decision-making going on.
At some point in the last year I learned about May Pang, and that, plus Get Back has me wondering what the best inside story bio/memoir/account of those times & that scene might be.
Appreciate the recommend, if anyone has one.
I mean her shrieking into a microphone for 20 minutes makes me think it was at least partly her idea to be there
Anyone have some good book suggestions to dig into? I feel like I have a decent working knowledge of the big Beatles milestones but I cant recall reading anything substantial.
Wondering what you you think about this song which was just released today. As someone of a certain age who grew up with the Beatles - I remember exactly when and where I was when I heard my first song by them. I was 6 years old and someone across the lake from our cabin were blasting I Want to Hold Your Hand. God, did all the grownups sitting around our campfire absolutely HATE it! I immediately loved it.
Anyway I have to confess that listening to Now and Then this morning brought tears to my eyes. Haunting lyrics and sound, with all four on the recording, and of course an incredible arrangement by Paul McCartney. A much better clearer vocal from John than the Anthology due to the remarkable software that was able to separate his vocal from the warbling piano. Such a beautiful and fitting finale to the greatest band in the world. It’s like John wrote it specifically for this moment in time. My only complaint is I wish Paul’s harmony vocals were recorded in 1994 instead of in his current raspy singing voice.
Is it the best Beatles song from their catalog? Of course not, but still magical. What do you think?
(And no comments please on how they weren’t very good, etc. Thanks.)
A Sunday evening in 1965. A family dinner. The Ed Sullivan Show. My uncle Frank… “They’re like animals”
Proposal to merge this into the Get Back Thread and just make it a Beatles thread? Plus we can include all the shitty “are they overrated” discussions in there as well. Cleaning up the riff raff @OffTheDole
Was fun to listen to the song yesterday in London when it was released at 2pm local time. The video is a bit cheesy I guess but still quite fun. Very impressive to read how software / AI was used to isolate and separate John’s vocal from the cassette tape and use it along with the Paul and Ringo’s recent studio work along with George’s guitar from 1996. Amazing stuff.
Really enjoy the new track.
Additionally, anyone see the list Apple Music did of top streamed/iTunes purchases since 2010.
Nothing on the list didnt make sense. But one interesting thing to me. 49 songs were written by Paul, 37 or so from John, 1? from ringo and the rest George. The number one song was here comes the sun and obviously an all George song. Just find it interesting that is number one and it isn’t Paul or John.
Is this the thread for all Perfect Club discussion?
Because I am fired up to listen to the new one about Groundhog Day. It’s one of my all-time top 10 movies.
We have a Groundhog Day thread here.
