The Down Under thread - ANZAC adjacent

I would bet a lot of people walk off St. AB feeling pretty beat up and would think less people would feel that way at The Dunes. Both are awesome, but St. AB has brutalised me more than Dunes.

I’ve only played both once…hoping that I might get the chance again when I head down for the F1 in April. Loved both to bits…The Dunes was the 2nd 18 of the day when I played it so was more physically demanding, but I remember St AB having a few tough holes (particularly 13), and seemed a little ā€œtighterā€ than The Dunes.

Sure I can understand that. From a ā€œmemorable/standout holeā€ perspective for me StAB has more of those. Dunes a lot of the holes merge together in my memory.

The much shorter walk to the first tee and Cups 9 also a great feature at Dunes.

The clubhouse scene is much stronger at Dunes too. AFAIK they haven’t got beyond the temporary structure at StAB yet which is a shame. Dunes has proper facilities - bar, change rooms etc.

From a ā€œgolf course onlyā€ perspective I reckon I would split 10 rounds 6-4 to StAB.

Yeah, you arent heading to St. AB for the clubhouse ambiance!!
Agree as well about the memorable holes at St. AB vs Dunes, but I dont agree on the point about the holes blending into each other there…very good variety and use of land there. No one would be disappointed with a visit to either is a fairly safe statement.

Another Hobartian here. Probably watched more NLU videos than I’ve hit golf shots in the last few years, but always threatening to shelve the ā€œmental repsā€ and get back out there. This year for sure…

Cool to see a little community forming

Great to see!

Let me know if you are interested in any NLU gear to watch those episodes with, and I can hand deliver them to you!

Should probably get out on the course at some point too. What course do you normally play?

Haha, thanks! I’ll keep that in mind

I’ve had spells at Royal and Tasmania, but couldn’t justify the cost for the amount I was playing. Kingston Beach is close and they let you jump on on Sunday mornings for green fees, so these days it’s there if it’s anywhere.

How about you?

I have one of the 10 round memberships at Tasmania which I haven’t been able to get through for the last couple of seasons! Same as you, in that if I am playing <10 rounds a year, it is hard to justify a full membership anywhere…

We are in a very good spot for public golf in coming years though. Can’t wait for the new 7 mile beach and Arm End courses to land

Bit of an about face topic wise, but with so much sun now I am thinking of moving from cap to sun/bucket hat. Does anyone have any recommendations? I see the NLU bucket that the Merch Dingo has, but are there other styles, brands etc that are a go to for people? Bog standard golf brands dont excite me all that much.

38° South performance buckets are ace in our climate. Highly recommend.

I have one from the Dunes. It’s much better quality than anything from imperial.

The dimensions look a bit fucked up in the pic, but I promise it’s not tophatty in person.

Only just seen this is @wilbur.kay’s Nest title and got a sensible chuckle from me.

I have the Fried Egg Imperial Bucket and it’s fine. Will likely bust it out Sunday as it’s due to be 35-36c when we tee off. Can’t comment on other brands as it’s the only one I have so :man_shrugging:

I need a bucket hat. Seems to be in style.

A mate has a nostalgic straw Shark hat which is mint!!

Would anyone like one of the big buckets?

Honestly not sure how they would ship, but I will sort that if there is some interest.

ps there is also a 20% off everything sale at the moment until 9pm tomorrow night

Yeah, nice one. I love it there.

We’ll have to get out and have a bash some time. Just need a couple of warmup rounds before there are any witnesses
