Lighting is tricky, you need to constantly think about positioning and framing while watching out for fans and security staff etc etc
And oh by the way…you only get 3 songs to get all your work done.
It’s a challenge, but the results can sometimes be freaking sweet. Any one have tips, tricks, things they do when shooting in low light?
I am no expert but a tip I was given was not to be afraid of raising the ISO to allow yourself to shoot with smaller apertures and faster shutter speeds.
People seem to think high ISO causes grain but the real cause of graininess is underexposure.
I don’t ever shoot indoors but If I’m shooting at sunset or on cloudy mornings I’m kicking that iso up so I can shoot sharp images without a needing a tripod and slow shutter speeds.
Can i recommend that you overexpose film by at least 1/3 stop? I usually accomplish this by lowering the ISO on my meter by 1/3-2/3 (ie 400 film i rate at 320). Film can handle a bit of overexposure, especially in high contrast situations.
You can also accomplish this by opening up the aperture 1/3 stop or slowing shutter by a third. But i like to set my meter so that my baseline is 1/3 over and i use the situation to then decide on shutter/aperture setting to accomplish what i am going for.
I definitely will on the next roll. Brand new camera and brand new film stock to me so I had no idea what it was going to look like. This camera has automatic DX coded ISO setting so I can’t push it like I can on my minolta which has an ISO dial. Apparently you can trick the code reader in the camera by cutting strips of metal to mimic the 400 or 800 iso codes to push 200 iso film.
I was shooting in pretty low light but wanted to push the camera out to shoot with small apertures just to test it. I was also testing the automatic meter in the camera (following the suggested amount) but I think it metered too much off of the setting sun in those two images. Also it was just straight up too dark when I took them, but new camera and wanted to test it.
My other images that were a little earlier and not angled towards the sun so much were much better exposed, like these
Curious, what apps/tricks/tools do you all use to manage your photo libraries? Dumping everything into Apple photos and then selectively pulling into Lightroom is getting unwieldy… things are getting chaotic bad on the camera roll.
I almost exclusively use Lightroom Classic. I import photos into Camera>year>month folders (lightroom then puts them in day folders automatically) and then use tags and keywords to manage the library. I delete rejected photos from the drive.
This way worst case scenario, i have a chronological accounting of each camera captures. I mostly use 1 camera, but i sometimes will have shots from other cameras, depending on what im shooting (i have a surf housing for a Canon 70D that i still use).
Thanks! Really proud of that one. My friend and I were waiting at an intersection and the truck pulled up next to us and I thought the chains looked cool. Can’t wait to post more.
I feel like it’s easy to take an good photo of an interesting subject. Challenging myself to take photos of simple things and make them interesting / take photos with a story.
