Only 2 more spots to go. Jackson Lake at sunrise
Hi! I’m very new and lost in these parts of the board…however I will be going to Augusta next April and since phones aren’t and I want to take some photos - I need help!
Also, having a kid soon, so a camera of some sort would be cool for that too…any recommendations on what I do or where I should go from here?
Also film seems to be making a comeback…should I get a $50 film camera and go wild?
Ohhhhh my friend - you’ve come to the right place.
THE thing to remember is that the lens is more important than the camera body. Buy a decent body with an AMAZING lens.
Some important questions:
- Action or portrait/landscapes?
- Do you want really long battery life?
- How big or “sturdy” would you like it to be? Waterproof even?
- Would you like something more customizable? Or something more overall versatile and “plug and play” ?
I think…
Landscapes mainly, but will want to do both likely…
Really long is not my main concern
I think something manageable would be great, don’t want to get too crazy big
Versatile, yes - plug and play would be great for a beginner, but I am willing to learn
Built in waterproofing? Or would you rather have to get a rain cover/grip?
Built in is probably best, but I am open to both if I understand the pros and cons
Do you consider yourself a hipster?
(This is important…)
I am not. But I can pretend to be
(That rules out any and all Leica cameras)
We’re flirting between a solid entry level “pro” camera, and a point and shoot that’s ready to roll and use ASAP.
Do you want to shoot any video with the new camera?
Likely not much video if any at all…
Last question - what’s the budget ROUGHLY looking like?
I was just about to ask that haha. “How much money do you want to spend” would be my first Q
Stuff gets pricy in a hurry (thankfully used market for cameras is pretty good)
True. I live in Minneapolis and we have a National Camera Exchange literally 3 minutes from my house. Makes buying and trading new/used pretty easy. And on that note…
I have a Fuji XT-5 and I’m thinking of swapping out one of my lenses. I currently have the 23mm f1.4 (35mm FF equivalent) that I love, but I find myself using it less and less. Been thinking about switching to the 35mm f1.4 (52mm FF) and just curious on peoples takes on those two focal lengths. I have a 56mm f1.2 that I shoot almost everything with, so when I switch to the 23mm, it just feels a little lacking. I don’t shoot a ton of landscape stuff, so I think I’d get along well with the 35mm. The one bummer is the 23mm has weather sealing and is a newer, updated version of the lens and then 35mm doesn’t really offer much of that. Just curious for peoples thoughts.
Budget is negotiable - like can we easily keep it under a grand? Or is that asking too much?
There’s an earlier conversation up above and I think we netted out at the fujifilm x100.
Another way to save money is to get the previous gen model
50mm FF equivalent is a really versatile focal length. It seems like the perfect middle ground between your two other primes as well.
When I had a canon I shot basically everything with a 50mm prime
I may, or may not, have a gently used and well cared for Fuji X100F available for sale.
Fuji x100 is a great camera.
As a fuji guy I can confirm you have to be ok with some people calling you a hipster though
I haven’t used the 23mm, but I have the 35 1.4 and it almost never leaves my camera. (granted my only other lens is the 18-55).
It’s super versatile. It works for portraits, it works for indoor, outdoor, general use. It’s a really great lens, optically. It’s a little slow to focus and not weather sealed, but I’m a huge fan.
Oh, for sure. I was more commenting on @alightpainter’s comment about the recommendation. If @TTrentC goes that route, I’m his huckleberry.
But yeah, the X100F is pretty hipster adjacent. A poor hipsters Leica.
