Strapped: Spring Training! (Arizona) - Touching Fingies and Budget Analysis

agree

My only semi critique with the budget would be losing out on the possibility of meeting really interesting hosts through lodging. The hosts in NE/Louisiana/Baltimore/and others added a lot of #gudstuff to the earlier seasons that isn’t possible when they get to stay in a nice Airbnb etc. Also the possibility of earning a nice hotel for a night through the money round was great theatre.

Obviously I understand the want to have a comfortable place to stay though and not having as many possibilities in a spring training setting

-6 means he is a regular 6. Otherwise, he would be a +6.

Also, the fact that he puts the minus sign in front…well…total douche.

This is kind of where I sit with it as well honestly. The series was great and I enjoyed all three episodes for what they were, but it definitely lost a bit of that true Strapped feeling a bit for me. That can be okay and I can make peace with that if this is truly the way the series is headed. But, I will definitely miss the “Strapped” ethos that existed through the first 10 seasons of the series.

As someone who truly cannot afford to do bucket list style trips every year or even every few years there was truly a sense of comradery I felt with the boys as they did their best to budget through three rounds of golf with an Air BnB and food etc. Seeing them get the budget raised and then end up at a putt-putt course for the final day was a bit of a though scene in that regard. In past seasons seeing a number like $91 for budget remaining on the last day would have meant there was going to be some good content about decision making. Would have been pretty cool to have seen them have to go through that again like, “How are we going to justify this to the C Suite? What if we get a great guest and go play putt-putt or something to make up for it?” Even if it’s a full on work, I would have enjoyed that false drama call back.

That being said, I’m really fucking glad they got Jason Benetti out on the putt-putt course with them because that was tremendous content.

Had never seen anyone put the minus so it put my head in a pretzel. Mea culpa

I have never once watched Strapped with any intention or desire to play any golf course they have ever been on. Yes, I’m a C-suite guy if I am going to travel for golf. Otherwise I will just stay home.

For me the series is two things:

  1. Two/three guys on the road having a good time meeting random characters, finding common ground, and highlighting the interesting twists of life with golf as a background.
  2. Comedic interplay between Neil and Randy.

No reason to apologize for someone else’s idiocy.

Taconic, Charleston Muni. Bold statement.

Not saying anyone should travel to go play Charleston Muni, but if you’re in the area, can’t recommend enough figuring out how to get there.

I’m not traveling with the specific intent of playing those courses. I would just stay home and play Holston Hills.

Fairly bold statement given a few of the courses they have played like @mshriver3 said.

Even then, the founding premise of the show was to show that there are courses everywhere you can go and play for a budget and still have fun without breaking the budget. It’s great that you’re not in the position that needs to worry about that. But there are some of us that live that life and it’s fun to see those courses highlighted.

i’ll concede to @VelvetSteve that i think his point is you wouldn’t travel for any of them. I’m OK with that. Saying you wouldn’t play them if the opportunity presented itself out of convenience, disagree with.

I’ve been very fortunate that the vasy majority of great courses I have played I have been hosted at. So, I’ve rarely paid for the C-suite golf. I most likely wouldn’t pay for that kind of golf if I had to fork over my own money. It’s just not worth it to me.

Hey…I played in the first two duels in Cincinnati at Avon Fields. Granted, I lived in Cincy at the time. And, I had not played Avon since I was 11 or 12 in the city championship.

Holsten is C suite as hell.

Source: Got married there and they STILL wouldn’t let me play the course.

Charleston Muni is absolutely fantastic though. Loved our trip there. Perfect strapped venue. I enjoyed traveling to the area just to play the course.

The golf course might be C-suite but the club itself is not. Cheap as hell to join (in any other city the initiation would be at least 10x and dues at least 2x). Sort of neighborhood club of die hard golfers.

In Knoxville, Cherokee is the true C-suite.

That also speaks to the changes in Airbnb. Used to be you’d rent a guesthouse and get to chat with the actual owner. Now it’s pretty much all property management

It’s definitely a shame what it’s turned into

I think you get more of the traditional Airbnb vibe when you rent an individual room vs an entire place. Which is what they were doing early on in the series.

Thank you all for watching. This was my favorite season for a lot of personal reasons, but any critiques are totally understood and were pretty expected when we set out.

I won’t speak for the other two “jamokes” but some context from where I’m sitting:

I think a lot of the itch to try to recreate or preserve the “early days” is exactly why we didn’t want to do any more episodes after SC. That’s impossible to do. Time moves on, things change and trying to put a vibe in formaldehyde is way, way more disingenuous than simply letting things evolve in my opinion.

I think the magic of the show is in its authenticity (whether it’s the interactions with guests, the interplay of Neil/Randy, the X’s and O’s of the golf, etc.). The reason that all of it feels real and resonates is because it IS real. And to that effect, you can only make the same joke or recreate the same scenario so many times before it gets performative and feels like you’re reading from your own script, which runs counter to the entire engine of the show. I know those two have zero interest in doing that and neither do I.

So for this one we decided to go experience something totally new that none of us had ever done (Spring Training). We had a bunch of cool people willing to show us around and tell us their stories. We’re all (much) older and trying to go a little slower. I think that’s what these eps were probably about?

I’m sure others will be totally different. Like everything else, we’re making it up as we go.

Love the flex of @MerchCzar and @Randy showing up to mini golf with their Scotty Cameron Putters, Pro V’s and Big continuing to use the Claw grip.
I know it is the sponsorship…but if you are a golfer, don’t know these 2 and are a hole behind, you are totally thinking what a couple of goofs.
