Spotted on the 1st tee of Strapped: West Texas
Eh… not quite. Lemme get back to you on a more accurate rendering…
This is a bit more like what I’m alluding to…
Condon is an absolute legend. Not sure if this was just a random screen grab (first pic) or not, but that dude can play
Thought this series of Strapped was pretty good but don’t think it’s in my top 5. Missed the lack of sherpas and local characters, outside of Back 9 Johnny of course. But still, watching Neil and Randy do their thing is always going to be entertaining. Shout out to DJ Pie and Co. though, the production quality only improves and improves. I did miss some hype or drama with the mega bonus but that’s always dependent on Neil playing well enough to get in that position, and I think we all know how hard that can be.
I think the boys mentioned it on the Trap Draw podcast where they talk about the inner workings of Strapped that they’d like to do all 50 states in the series. The first episode came out on October 2nd, 2018 and nearly 3 years later, they’ve done 9 series and maybe 11 states? I might be wrong on the state count but I think they played more than one state in a couple of seasons.
Just how achievable is that 50 state goal really? I know Covid slowed things down but at a pace of about 3 seasons a year and another ~ 39 states to cover, it could take another 13 years to get there. Not shitting on anyone with this thinking either, I realize how long it all takes to plan, film, and edit. But just thinking that the goal is looking unattainable?
That’s the DR pro you’d find grinding away with a CPG type Miata.
I thought it was a great season of Strapped and inspired me to have my own little strapped weekend. This past weekend I spent 3 nights sleeping in my truck, driving from golf course to golf course.
Started out on Thursday, spent the day watching golf at the Ryder Cup and exploring Green Bay.
Friday, drove up to Marquette, MI, where I played The Heritage and Greywalls. Then hung out exploring Marquette, its breweries and nightlife.
Saturday, drove down to Charlevoix, MI where I got to play Belvedere Golf Club and explore the lovely town of Charlevoix.
Weather nixed my plan to play Wawashkamo on Mackinaw Island on Sunday but still got to visit lovely towns in northern/Upper Lower Michigan.
Sleeping in my car to save on the budget was definitely inspired by this Strapped season and I highly enjoyed my trip! So for that, gotta give thanks to the Strapped Boys, for sure!
Neil: No trespassing - we’re blowing shit up over here. If you wanna get got - come over here.
DJ: muffled giggling and shaking the camera
Neil: OK, I guess we’re not camping there
Exchanges like that are super genuine and always make me smile. Favorite Strapped season? Probably not. Proud to have contributed a meager amount of capital to support it? Hell yeah.
I thoroughly enjoyed these episodes, and I really liked the shift from some of the really budget-focused seasons in the past. (Not that those aren’t fun in their own right)
This season kind of gave off some whiffs of Linklater in a lower stakes (don’t mean that negatively), just see what happens and then figure it out sort of way. Could see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s thing if you were really into the format of the series, but I thought the slower-paced trip was a great breather.
Love to hear that! I camped out last summer in order to play Chambers Bay. Camping/vanning/sleeping in your car for golf is a sicko move but was very fun in my experience. Loved that the boys showed that this season. Maybe we need a refuge camping/golf trip.
laughs in Sufjan Stevens fan
lol
This wasn’t my favorite season, but I still enjoyed and will rewatch it. I liked the change of pace with no sherpas (sorry @kevjones). As much as they have all added to the episodes, sometimes I think they can take on too much of a role. What I like about Strapped is that it is a simple buddies trip that anyone can do. I’m married with two kids, so I can’t go on golf trips all the time. So I enjoy watching the guys go to places I’d probably never go and have fun.
This season felt like it was missing something and honestly, that might be on me. I thought they would do a little more “overlanding” and show some things from the campsite. But that’s not really their wheelhouse and all of the driving might have taken too much out of them. The non-golf fun is what I feel makes this series a can’t miss. But I realize that can’t be the focus of every episode.
For the record I also enjoyed the lack of sherpas this go round. It was a nice change of pace.
Vibes of the early days in Iowa with the boys just finding their own way.
Can confirm. The Chicago dog has never been on my list, but had one this past weekend in Chicago and it was way better than I thought. “Fucking delightful” is an understatement.
To take the mustard stance a step further, there is only one mustard for dogs, and that is Gulden’s spicy brown. Plain Yellow is a pretender.
Also, as an east coast northerner who has transplanted to Atlanta, the coleslaw and pimento cheese dog from The Varsity is a glorious symphony of flavors that I would have never thought of putting together. You’re welcome.
The way I see it there’s a lot of practical goals for every strapped trip. Sherpas, courses, DJ going a little film student on us with a fancy camera angle, etc.
But the heart and soul of the show is summed up in the first season when Randy says quite simply, “I think it’s dangerous, to like, pre-spend the bonus, you know. But I do like your idea of going into the Bud tent of the thrill zone in the State Fair, and just showering the East Des Moines women with free alcohol.”
Sums life up pretty well.
@methridge show this lovely individual to the member’s lounge
Could not agree more. Love the series. This season is incredibly well shot, but seems to be missing characters…
This season was really different than the others in how isolated the three guys were, but it totally fit with the setting. The desert is remote, lonely, empty and the austere travel arrangements and lodging blended perfectly.
The photography of this season tops even Southern California. My wife said, “wow, they really love playing with their drone.”
This season was great. Can’t wait for the next one.
hey at least Suf is BACK Beginner’s Mind is great
Uh @Double_Bogey_Dave and @OffTheDole? You guys trying to pull one over here? Making a joint profile?
Very suspicious.
