Huge recommendation to Ken at Westfields. Most of my bag was fit by him.
How was the selection and pricing there?
Pricing could probably have been a bit cheaper but I had the money saved and valued his services. I think driver fitting cost was $150. I think clubs were just regular cost, and I don’t recall any *at least major) brands that weren’t available to assess,
I also did a driver fitting at Westfields and had a good experience. It was the older guy who I believe is retired now. I ordered the driver straight from Taylormade, at his suggestion.
I used Todd too. He’s actually a rep for xxio now (odd I know). Ken fitted me into a driver couple years ago which I didn’t like at all (I also changed my swing a bit afterwards so probably not his fault).
Haha that’s perfect. When I was there, there were a ton of xxio clubs around and I made a joke about how expensive they were and he got pretty salty about it. He gave me a little lecture about how great they were. That makes a lot of sense now.
Good Morning All! Thought I’d post some information about an upcoming scramble tournament late October. Should be a really fund day at a really fun course. I played in this tournament two years ago and the prizers were fantastic and the open bar was event better. A best friend of mine is the Strategic Ops Director and this organization does a lot of amazing things for impoverished communities within the Philippines and Guatemala. My buddy, Sam, actually led a fundraising effort and personal traveled to Guatemala this past year to install and Technology Learning center in an impoverished community near our companies office in Antigua. So I can personally attest that the funds raised at this event, make a huge impact - and you get a chance to golf on a work day and drink cold beers, seltzers, liquor, water, or soft drinks (whatever your vice of choice is).
If folks do end up putting a team together and going, let me know, would love to say hi and maybe grab a refuge get together picture with everyone!
Off topic - but would appreciate some recommendations from locals.
Wife and I will be in DC the week between Xmas and New Years. Have dinner plans locked in for Bazaar, Philippe Chow and Old Ebbitt Grill. Looking for some low-key options in the downtown area for our other nights.
I’ve heard decent things about Andy’s pizza. Beyond that, I’m lost.
Are you open to places in other areas of DC or looking to keep it specifically to the downtown area?
We won’t have a car - so if it’s a reasonable taxi/rideshare trip, sure.
All of my meals in actual DC are the nice occasions and nights out, so I don’t really have any recs for lowkey places, but @jandywlu, @theD1, and @JMAGS have never steered me wrong.
I will say, my wife and I went to Ris a few weeks ago, which is close to where you’ll be, and it was great.
Where are you staying and any cuisine/cost considerations?
Staying at the Waldorf - would prefer some laid back/cheaper options as our other three reservations are going to be on the pricy side but open to suggestions.
Got a few tips for you:
Andy’s pizza is great but the locations leave a lil to be desired for eating in. There’s a great spot in NoMa or Brookland called MenoMale where they use a wood oven and it’s a chill spot.
There’s a laidback Mexican spot downtown called Oyamel, which is owned by local celebrity chef José Andrés. Good spot where you can eat well and have some margaritas.
If you’re willing to go a few min north in town I would check out Thip Khao where the Laotian food is damn good. Timber Pizza is kinda nearby and has some of the best pizza in the area too.
And if you want to venture into a divey sports bar where the bar food is good and cheap, I’d recommend Ivy and Coney — a haven for Chicago sports fans. The Detroit pizza, half smokes and wings are a fav of mine.
If you’ve got anymore questions feel free to reach out. Am a bit of a foodie and know the scene decently
Walkable
Definitely check out Central right across Penn. It’s a bit of a tweener, fancier than casual but not super high end. Everything they do is fantastic though.
Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken is walkable and is a fun, casual spot for breakfast/lunch.
The Hamilton is over near Old Ebbitt and is solid with all sorts of live music offerings.
I haven’t been to the current reincarnation, but the rooftop restaurant at the Hotel Washington is at least worth stopping in for a (pricey) drink. The views are among the best in the city.
Penn Social is fun for people watching and a variety of games, food is standard bar fare.
Jaleo is a DC institution. Tapas, so depending on how you play your cards it can be pricey or not, but everything is amazing.
Hill Country BBQ is a convenient lower key option. Food isn’t spectacular but gets the job done.
The biggest thing to remember about where you are is that there’s not really any food options south of you. You have a ton of options between 6th to the east, 15th to the west, Penn to the south, and K to the north, but its starts getting more hit or miss after that. If you’re walking from the hotel down to the mall or around the White House, you’re going to have to head back north of Penn to find decent food options unless you go all the way to the Wharf or Capitol Hill.
If sightseeing on Capitol Hill
Santa Rosa Taqueria, Good Stuff, and We, The Pizza are all next to each other on Penn and 3rd SE and all owned by Top Chef alum Spike Mendelsohn. In terms of casual fare, they are pretty good and between the three offer lots of choices.
Further down Penn (away from the Capitol) are Barrel and Beuchert’s, both great spots to grab a drink and lighter fare.
Worth the Uber
Perhaps a spicy take, but I like Tiki TNT and the Wharf area in general. Grab a drink or two and then just walk the strip. There are a ton of different food spots at various price points if you want to plan ahead, or if you’re feeling lucky just see who has a spot for you.
Haha I do too and I’m always afraid to say it.
No offense — being Mexican myself, I find the Santa Rosa rec

Each to their own tho! ![]()
It’s not great, but it is present, affordable-ish, and convenient. Prefer La Plaza, La Lomita, or Las Placitas, but those aren’t as convenient or destination dining.
I hear ya. I usually venture to Paraíso, La Tejana (best breakfast tacos in the area), Taqueria Habanero, Taqueria Al Lado 2, Muchas Gracias, Maíz 64 and Oyamel. These are predominantly Mexican — a lot of local spots are run by Salvadorans making Mexican food. While I love Salvadoran food — I’d rather get it from my peeps.
We are regulars at La Plaza and live right by La Lomita. The best part is the free tequila shot at the end of the meal lol
