Assuming you’re staying in DC proper:
- Falls Road (MD)
- Laurel Hill (VA)
- Twin Lakes (VA)
- East Potomac (DC, but only on weekdays, you’re likely in for a 6 hour round on a weekend).
Scroll up for Guest Set club specs and let me know if you want to use them! Could save you a checked bag if you’re flying in.

Hey! New here. Tried to join the discord but it looks like the link is expired. Is it still active?
Here’s a fresh link. The expire after 7 days I think.
What apps chats are much more active but, get involved in both!
Just wanted to share this agian, since we still have foursomes open.
On September 1st my family is hosting the 2023 Birdies for Brain Tumors golf tournament to support the National Brain Tumor Society. I am a 6 year brain cancer survivor. Since 2017, we have raised over $30,000.
I hope folks can make it out!

Live outside of Richmond (after many years in DC) but looking to get involved in the Roost. Any help greatly appreciated.
Hey all, I’m coming down to DC for a wedding the week of 9/4 and definitely bringing the sticks and trying to play 9/5-9/7 (and would love company if anyone is free mid-week). I’m seeing some love for the UMD course but I’m wondering what my other options are in the area. I could probably get a call down to anywhere that is mostly okay with unaccompanied guest play from my head pro but if the best options are public, that makes everything easier. What are to coolest places to see within ~an hour of DC?
Where are you staying? There are good public tracks in all directions of DC IMO but they will require a 30-60 minute drive so if you’re staying in the VA suburbs I don’t want to suggest an MD track over by Annapolis, etc.
Staying in Georgetown so all directions should be equally shitty?
Agreed. Then I would just say my favorites in the area are Westfields to the west, Potomac Shores to the south, and preserve at Eisenhower to the east. UMD is a fine option as well. If you’re looking for something a bit more special, Whiskey creek just south of Frederick is probably my favorite non-famous golf course in the world. Happy to answer more questions if you have them.
from Georgetown the Montgomery County MD public courses are probably all within an hour, if not much less, so long as you don’t line yourself up for a rush hour drive. Personal favorite is Falls Road (a bit short, but usually great conditioning and plenty of holes give you options off the tee or on approach). Haven’t played them all but others in here can chime in.
If you wanna drive a bit further into Maryland, Worthington Manor or the aforementioned Whiskey Creek could be good options. We no longer recommend Blue Mash as its pricing is outta control.
Out to VA your best bet is probably Laurel Hill, followed by Twin Lakes or Westfields. Beware of the dual starter shacks at Twin Lakes (one by the parking lot, the other 150 yards away by the tee) who don’t communicate with each other so you should check in with both upon arrival to make sure they don’t give away your tee time.
As for DC munis, technically Rock Creek Park is probably closest to georgetown but it’s not really worth a visit imo. If you have weekday time and it’s nice out, East Potomac might be worth a shot and the drive down there shouldn’t be too bad if you’re not in the midst of rush hour (pop across the key bridge from georgetown into VA, shoot down the potomac on the other side of the river on the GW parkway, then back across the river to the golf course). Beware pace of play can be abysmal on the Blue course in particular. White is a nice 9 hole executive with usually the best greens on the property. Red is a super short par-3, usually pretty banged up.
If you’re looking for one last gross event in late October, my club has you covered. Open to the public, and course conditions should be great this time of year. We stole the superintendent from Caves Valley, and he has the course in the best shape it’s ever been.

What’s up DMV refuge!
Sharing an event coming up on Oct 23rd at Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria. The Silver Dollar Shootout hosted by BeltwayGolfer.
Gonna be a fun day giving DMV golfers the opportunity to play their own ball at a local private, with a 2-person Better Ball to scratch the competitive itch. A bunch of prizes, (gross and net winners), tee-gifts for all, food & drink included throughout & an on-site auction loaded with foursomes at DMV golf courses, and golf memorabilia for attendees to bid on. Event is limited to 72 golfers so keep the round moving. All proceeds from the event will be going to the DC chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
If not familiar with BeltwayGolfer, we’ve been covering golf in the DMV for several years over on IG, our website, a monthly newsletter, and podcast (check out our 2020 episode all about the NLU refuge, which includes a laughably bad photoshop job of Tron on our episode page
)
Come on out!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a club fitter in the Alexandria/Arlington area?
Thank you
I recommend E Custom at Laurel Hill (link) or Tyson West (link)
I’ve had friends do full bag fittings at both places and been happy with each. E Custom you’ll hit outnif a bay into a driving range, so you’ll see your ball flight. Tyson West is in a studio. I think Tyson West has more shaft / head combos.
If you’re willing to ball out and drive a little, go see Wade at Golf Care Center in Maryland. Dude is like Doc from Back to the Future, but he does golf clubs instead of DeLoreans.
Thank you for the recommendation I will take a look at both of them.
That isnt too bad of a drive, I will take a look. Thank you!
