Roll Call: Washington DC/DMV Area

Just got back from Taqueria Al Lado, and now I’m adding all of the rest of these spots to my list of places to hit up. Biggest complaint I had moving up here from Texas was the lack of actual Mexican food.

Just search this thread for my posts, I’ve got a couple long ones with restaurant breakdowns

Thanks!

Completely forgot about The Hamilton, we enjoyed it on our last visit. Debating on Succotash as well.

I’ve heard good things about 2 Amy’s but we’re having dinner with friends in Baltimore at an Italian joint, so trying to mix things up.

My southern wife reports that Succotash is good, not great. It’s part of a local ownership group that has been pretty successful though. Another to add within walking distance is the Round Robin Bar at the Willard. The hotel will be decked out for Christmas and the bar is definitely worth popping into.

2 Amy’s is fantastic. Could easily parlay dinner there with a visit to the National Cathedral and/or the National Presbyterian Church, which will likely have a stuff going on that week.

Not necessarily food related, but having been a Sherpa for holiday guests for 20+ years, a few mild takes

  • The White House Christmas tree is just okay. It’s basically a pyramid of lights hiding a tree and ends up being pretty generic and super crowded. I prefer the Capitol tree, which has fewer people, makes for better pictures, and lets you get up close.
  • Make sure and hit up the holiday exhibits at the U.S. Botanical Garden (s/o @Randy). The outdoor model train exhibit is a ton of fun, and the scale models and holiday flowers inside are totally worth it, especially if you’re already going to the Capitol tree (see above).
  • Check out some of the outdoor markets. There’s a seasonal one over on F street between 7th and 9th that will likely still be open, along with the traditional Eastern Market on Capitol Hill (weekends only).
  • Go ice skating. There are outdoor rinks by the U.S. Sculpture Garden, the Wharf, and in the Navy Yard area (my 'hood).
  • Enchant at Nats Park isn’t worth the price or crowd. Everything there is an influencer content wet dream… looks great from afar but far from great.

Yeah I moved here from Dallas 5 years ago and same thing. Hard adjustment. You’re gonna love La Tejana then — just like back home

Just moved within a few blocks of La Lomita and I’ve been dying to try it. Had heard mixed opinions but just from the low frills appearance I thought it would be my type of spot.

I’ll see you out at Langston some time (shamelessly looking for rides as a carless city dweller).

Welcome to the hood!

It’s definitely not the best food, but it’s enjoyable and there’s margaritas to be drank :joy:

If any of you take the train semi-regularly - what’s the difference between Northeast Regional Business Class and Acela business class?

Acela is slightly faster to Baltimore from DC, but is less expensive by a few bucks.

I would just take the less expensive one. Baltimore to DC isn’t going to matter. Even going from DC to New York and back, the Acela business class is nice but it’s still just basically a more comfortable and slightly roomier airline seat. I miss the old café cars, because I would just stake out a table in there and work.

Rode the North East corridor every week for 3 years from DC to Philly and NYC.

Acela is nicer and faster. If I was saving 30 minutes or more on total time, worth the money if work was paying.

Otherwise. NE Regional is just fine. Big fan of train travel - wish we had the opportunity to do it more in the states.

In this case, the Acela is actually cheaper - so sounds like I’ll go that route

From Balt to DC? Absolutely whichever is cheaper. You will barely be on the train long enough to notice the difference.

La Tejana is so good. Borderline whether it’s worth the often 30+ minute wait on the weekend, but you can’t beat their breakfast tacos anywhere close. Especially the one with brisket from 2Fifty

I am visiting my wife’s family in Huntsville and had the most atrocious burrito ever for lunch. This image of a proper set of tacos is making me froth like a rabid dog.

A bad burrito is the worst.

Hell yeah! You’re right about the line — I usually try and get there around 7 to beat the crowd :joy:

I’ve never had a bad burrito before. I didn’t know it was possible to fuck them up.

A poorly wrapped burrito? Sure.

A burrito that was smothered in a queso or some other sauce when I didn’t want that? Yeah, been there. Disappointing but not the end of the world. Sometimes even a pleasant surprise.

A shitty wrap job covered in piss quality queso and filled exclusively with overcooked unseasoned ground beef? Blegh.

Twelve hours later and I’m still dumbfounded by how bad it was.

Anyone had the tacos inside Crooked Run in Sterling? First time I went I walked up to the window to order just as they were closing. Went back literally a week before COVID shutdowns and really liked them, but haven’t had a need to be back in that area since. Wondering if they are still good and worth adding as a stop next time I’m in the area.

Shoutout to @beltway for his tourney out at Mount Vernon today. Had a good time and the course was in prime shape — smooth, fast greens to pair with some hella nice fairways. Met some great people too :muscle:t4:
