It was on the air. Tried to find it on social media but couldn’t. Just happened to be watch Golf Channel at the time.
They put in more effort this season but Mariners has always been a dog track.
It’s public but have you tried Copper Cove (formerly Westlake)?
“Always” is such a strong statement. The first 15 or so years Mariners Landing was open, it was a fantastic golf course. Poor management/ownership, economic regression in and around SML, and piss poor conditions have led to what’s there now.
It’s sad because it was once a gem!
Well said. Wasn’t coming from a place of disdain, more recency bias and frustration because I enjoy the layout and it offers some great views (hole 5 in particular).
They’re sinking some legit money into it now, will be curious to see what becomes of it.
Good to hear they are refurbishing the place. When I lived in Roanoke, we would drive down a couple times a month. But that was before conditions fell all to pieces. The last few times I have played ML, I was disappointed in what it had been allowed to fall into.
Do you live near the lake? Sign up for our event. I drive past west lake to fish most weekends with the kids and they haven’t changed the sign yet!
Mariners is our regions rtj and I’m sad sad sad to see it in the shape it is but damn that place was tough from the back tees.
Will be in Harrisonburg and Winchester traveling for work this week, would love to get some golf in while in town. Any direction on best tracks to play in the area would be appreciated. Thanks!
Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg is one of the better muni’s I’ve ever played. Fun layout that’s always in really good shape.
I don’t know anything about Winchester.
Heritage Oaks is cool - great vibe and value. Lakeview on the other side of town is solid and I have always liked Packsaddle Ridge about 20 min from downtown Harrisonburg. Wild layout and just different than the other 2, but not sure about conditioning as it seems to be more and more of a ghost town each time I visit…
I’ve played Lakeview and Packsaddle several times as well. My in-laws have had a timeshare at Massanutten for over 40 years. They gifted each of their four kids a timeshare for the same week as wedding gifts. The whole family goes to spend the week together. My wife and daughters are there right now. I couldn’t get away this year to be able to go.
I really like 18 of the 27 holes at Lakeview but can’t recall which is which at the moment. Packsaddle is tough for me to get behind. Half of the holes are great, the other half are missing the clowns mouth and windmills.
It is definitely “extreme” and I’m always frustrated a lot when I’m there, but it’s nice to be the only player/group out there and get to hit some shots you don’t get to hit at other places. I think the 9 at Lakeview I used to dislike was “Peak” 9 (Lake & Mountain being the other 2), but it’s been a while…
I REALLY hope you went with your buddies wishes and played Golden Horeshoe, it’s a great track with some of the best par 3s in the country. If not make sure you get it next time, the move is to play the green early and gold in the afternoon at a steep discount.
Rock Harbor in Winchester is a nice place and usually in good shape, 36 holes.
Any intel on Sly Fox and/or Blue Ridge Shadows?
So my partner for my member-guest this weekend had to back out. I don’t really have any friends that golf. So I have come here to see if anyone would be interested in playing two days of best ball at Winton Farm in Amherst, VA. Let me know!
I stopped and played fox on the way home from DC one way, was fun. Keep expectations down and just have a good time and its worth a stop
if my wife’s birthday was not sunday, damn
We played Royal New Kent and absolutely loved it.
Surely she would understand you playing golf with a complete stranger.
Blue Ridge Shadows should be in terrific shape like everything else in the area right now, I swear we’ve had just enough rain at the right time this early season and it’s been awesome outside of the allergies. it’s got some excellent holes, it sprawls and is a really tough walk with the elevation changes but I’d say worth it, a value for the price and you won’t have to lower expectations. First time through could be tough, You need a bit of course knowledge on hole 1 and couple on the back that are blind tee shots but I’d recommend it.
