I was there once but sadly didn’t play. The club house has some awesome Dwight Eisenhower memorabilia including a hand written draft of his D-Day speech and an old set of his clubs. While that isn’t reason to join a club, it is definitely a reason to take a tour! I don’t specifically remember seeing their practice area, but it seemed like a very active membership, which would lead me to believe they have good practice facilities.
I have a buddy who’s a member there and I’ll be playing their Member / Guest this summer. It’s split into two sites - Arlington & Fairfax. Arlington is your classic old school, tight layout. The range is a little short but the course is a lot of fun, in great shape, and you get a solid view of the Washington Monument from the clubhouse. It has a lot of cool history and Presidents like to play there for whatever it’s worth. Fairfax is a bit more long & modern, awesome practice facilities, and it’s also in fantastic shape. Highly recommend ANCC!
I played A/N like 5 years ago so a little hazy and went there for a wedding. I recall a decent sized range in terms of # of hitting stations. Cool memorabilia as mentioned above in the clubhouse. I think you get access to the Fairfax course as well if you join. From what I’ve heard financially it’s the best value near the city.
You nailed it. If you’re in Virginia the only really options for private clubs inside the beltway are Army Navy, Washington Golf and CC, and Belle Haven. 27 holes at the Arlington location, plus an additional 27 in Fairfax is unmatched in the area, so if pricing is the relatively the same, it’s a great value.
New to the refuge here in Amherst, VA home of Poplar Grove and my home club Winton Farm. If you’re every passing down 29 let me know. I am usually playing as a single and would love the company.
Never played Winton Farm, I’m outa roanoke, home course Ashley Plantation off 81.
Welcome to the Refuge. I don’t make it all the way out to Amherst often, but if I do, I will definitely hit you up. I do get up to Spring Creek outside of Charlottesville once in a while, let me know if you want to meet up.
Poplar Grove is one of my favorite courses in the state. Love it. Haven’t been out the way since they underwent all the recent renovations. Is it worth the hefty price tag now?
It’s been awhile since I got out there, but they raised the price nearly $100. For me it’s always hard to pay for that much for a round. I’d be curious what kind of experience it is now.
How far from the chicken coop are you?
I don’t remember if anyone discussed this, but is Schoolhouse Nine worth it? It’s a little less than two hours from me, but I’d probably try to add something else with it. It looks and sounds like a cool spot, but is it even worth bothering?
Im about twenty minutes from there.
I think it definitely is. The greens have lots of contours, but play slow so they aren’t too tricked up. Very laid back vibe and can loop it as many times as you want. Plus the Headmaster pub is great too. Which direction are you coming from? There aren’t many full length courses around it.
It’s pretty cool, I went up with some buddies to Charlestown and we stopped along the way.
It was 5 of us total, two guys that are golf nuts and three buddies who swing a club in jeans and tee shirts. I walked into the schoolhouse and couldn’t find a desk. So I walked up to the bar and “checked in.” There were a bunch of locals hanging out on a Thursday evening and I asked, “Is it okay if some guys play in jeans and t-shirts?” One of the townies quickly responds “This is Sperryville, you come as you are.”
I was hooked I love townies and the course is fun even if I played like a dog. A little bit of elevation change (10’ max) some undulation in the greens. They were slow at the time I believe it was early spring.
There’s also a pretty big arcade in the school house we ordered drinks and some apps after the 9 and headed on our way.
I wouldn’t go to Sperryville just for the SH9, maybe for an event but not just to loop the 9 a few times.
I’m a member at ANCC with little ones in the junior programs. Shoot me a DM and we chat more
