Roll Call: Virginia

On a positive note, the dude that built and owns Olde Mill donated $35 million dollars to Virginia Tech.

he should donate us a day to have our outing too but I don’t have all day to complain about that situation more.

He should, but he won’t. He’s eager to please his alma-mater and get his name on some buildings but doesn’t want many people on his golf course. Which is funny considering he doesn’t even play.

Just a suggestion, but have you tried Chatmoss in Danville or Cross Creek in Mount Airy?

I have not tried either of those, both are solid suggestions though. I will give them an email here today.

Is Chatmoss the kind of place I could stroll in and talk one afternoon? I sold a fire truck to Henry County last week, and in the year long process of build/delivery I’ll be down there quite a bit.

Technically, they require a member in good standing to sponsor someone wanting to host an event. Considering you have a professional relationship with folks in Henry County, that shouldn’t be a problem. I would think the guys at Chatmoss will reach out to the County to verify your professional relationship and then get someone at the club (possibly a Henry County employee) to sponsor. My first call would be to your professional contact and explain what you are looking for. See if they open a door or two for you. Then reach out to the club.

We have a “client appreciation golf day” every September. We try to spread the wealth and have the event in different places throughout our footprint. Chatmoss hosted us a few years ago and were very cool about it. We have had dozens of civil and environmental projects in Henry County over the years.

I had a group of 8 guys go play 18 at Olde Mill and they seemed very eager to have us. That said, there were probably only 6 other people on the course the whole day.

I thought it was odd when I called a week in advance to make the tee time and the guy said “you should have the place to yourself.”

We have discussed meeting up there because I have some friends in Raleigh and it’s about the halfway point. They even quoted us a price for a 3 night stay with golf included.

Were they not receptive to your event?

Had a group of 12 there for a 36 Friday 18 Saturday weekend 2 or 3 years ago in September. Course was incredible, we were pretty much by ourselves as well.

But the staff and restaurant? They might as well have had signs that said “fuck off” we had a reservation for dinner Friday night, just to be safe. There were 4 people in the bar, a couple in the dining room, and us. Took 30 minutes to get a drink, ultimately over 2.5 hours to eat. I’m talking easy food, like I think we got a bunch of wings, and then half the group wanted a burger and the other half wanted a quesadilla. We would’ve left, but as you know there isn’t shit there for food. And we didn’t bring any since we had the reservation.

Love the golf course, hate the service.

I live 20 minutes from Olde Mill. They are all over the place. One day, welcoming and eager to have guest play. The next day, eager to ensure everybody on property never comes back.

If you were there today, I’m not surprised it was empty. They were all at my home club 20 minutes away. All golf carts were gone by 11:15am. No parking space left. It’s not this busy in July.

I’m glad to hear that, because my buddy and I thought we were crazy.

He lives in Roanoke and I used to stay with him when I’d go out there for work. Once a year we’d take a day and go play as many holes as we could (record was 54 and we were DEAD), but when we left that trip we felt bad. We talked the guys into driving to middle of nowhere and that was our experience. Everyone loved the course, but we haven’t been back.

The guy that owns Olde Mill is eccentric as hell. Doesn’t play golf but built a golf resort on his childhood farm. Now, he doesn’t want many people using his golf course. He’s been friends with my father-in-law for 50 years.

The staff have mostly been there for years. Especially the restaurant staff. They cater very well to their regulars but hate “implants” with a passion. If they don’t know you, you’re an implant and you get a shitty attitude and service. It’s a shame because it’s a remarkable golf course.

Anyone play Viniterra recently? Looking to play this Wednesday.

That’s very interesting. Sounds just like what happened to another golf course, Redtail Mountain, in Mountain City, TN. Wonderful golf course, but out in the middle of nowhere.

Anyway, real eccentric bought it, a guy who doesn’t golf. Jacked all the prices up in an area that’s pretty depressed economically. Anyway, it closed down a couple years ago. Great course, terrible management.

Re:Roosts, looking at the map and just want to throw out that it might be helpful to have a discussion with @Double_Bogey_Dave and the Carolina folks about Richmond and further south. If we get a lot of Richmond and VA folks who want to do the Links Troost, we can adjust our scheduling to dip south maybe once or twice (since we’re definitely going to have some Baltimore and Maryland activities), but I want everyone to have the opportunity to participate as much as they can in this structure, whether that’s driving south or north. (Blacksburg folks might even be in a position where Nashville/Knoxville is the best option.)

As I understand it, you have to “declare” for a Roost that you intend to try and qualify for. This shouldn’t stop you participating in any local events or non-qualifier Roost things, but I don’t know if we have deadlines for declaring or things like that just yet. (DBD please correct me here if I’m wildly off base.)

Once I have more information on the Links Troost qualifier, I’ll try and get it to the Richmond/further south folks as soon as I can to help y’all plan.

this a decent deal?

The Queen’s roost I would assume would be happy to meet near the VA Carolina line

I ran an event where we had a NC vs VA team format last year, and I’m already in the process of contacting courses around the border for round 2. Open to any suggestions

This is accurate, we definitely have room for anyone who wants to join the Chatham Lawn Club and the NRT seems similarly open. Hoping we can get an RVA roost set up for 2023.

I’m pretty much like smack dab in the middle of 3 borders…I could potentially fill a hole in any of them, keep me in mind if you need to fill gaps
