Roll Call: The Duck Club | Canadians, Beer and Cow Pastures

Bellwoods has been a constant rec for anyone I’ve asked so think we’ll have to make our way there. Just hoping to avoid insane crowds celebrating St Paddy’s.

Food-wise probably looking more on the casual side of things but per my wife “I wouldn’t mind having at least one nicer meal but not like super fancy”.

Probably not on this trip but might be good to have on hand for future visits! Best pizza in the city does sound tempting though…

Pompette would hit the “nicer but…” thing for sure!

Also love Pai downtown - really fantastic Thai food, and the place is always absolute packed.

  • 1 on PAI for Thai food. I’ll add Patois as a recommendation if you like Caribbean food. Also near Kensington market so could be combined into a visit there

I’d definitely head to Queen W/Dundas W/ Trinity Bellwoods area. Paris Paris for wine, Haifa Room, Cote de Beouf, Favorites are all on the Ossington strip and really good.

Matty Matheson has a bunch of restaurants if you’re into his stuff. Prime Seafood Palace on the fancier end, Matty’s Patty’s if you’re looking for a quick and excellent burger.

Hello fellow Canucks!

Not sure how many of you here are based in Winnipeg but I am going to be moving to the city come July.

Anyone have recommendations on a private club to join? It probably won’t happen this year but ideally I can play around a bit this summer to commit for 2025. Any suggestions would be great!!

Also, if there are members in Winnipeg, would love to play a round this summer.

Thanks!

I haven’t played any golf in Winnipeg, although I’ve spent a bunch of time there working over the past decade. On paper, you’re probably starting with Elmhurst (Donald Ross just NE of the city), Pineridge (another Ross literally across the street but looks quite different) and St Charles in the SW side (9 Ross holes, 9 Mackenzie holes!)

No clue of the price of admission, though - would need some legwork to see what they are all like. I am out there in a couple of weeks, but its the wrong time of year to send hopeful letters to the pros begging for access for a day… probably a little too snowy still!

St. Charles will be the one to look into the most. Currently undergoing renovations on their MacKenzie and Ross nine’s. The third nine will get a completely new design in the coming years after these two fully open in 2024. Expect this to be a really good place to play, hoping to see it in 2025.

As Duncan mentioned Elmhurst and Pineridge are two more to look at. Both Donald Ross designs. These courses are actually right beside each other in the North East corner of the city.

I have heard good things about Glendale and Southwood as well. But having never been to the city at this point I can’t comment if either are worthy of joining. Just trying to point you in the right direction.
Not too sure if Niakwa has memberships - it is a Stanley Thompson designed course and sort of right in the heart of the city while the others are more on the outer perimeters.

If you are still around in 2025 perhaps ill send you a message. Hoping to make a trip out there to see those mentioned above and Clear Lake as well.

Also our sincere condolences on your upcoming move to Winnipeg.

I want to come through and defend Winnipeg because I really do enjoy spending time there on my now-occasional trips. But it might be because its only ever 4/5 days at a time? But those winters, man… just tough. Really, really tough.

Moving from Kenora in Northwest Ontario so it is an upgrade haha I grew up in the GTA and hate it there. Good golf but not enough to entice me back that’s for sure

I believe @leftist is in Winnipeg as well, not sure how much he still frequents here though. He’s a member at one of the courses there, Southwood maybe? Might be someone worth trying to connect with

Brethren of the North, my wife and I are in Toronto tonight for a concert and debating between TTC or an Uber to get there from our hotel. Staying at the Doubletree on Chestnut. Is taking the car to Broadview and back as easy as it looks or should we be wary of 40 minutes or less estimates for the trip?

Broadview and where? The Dundas Street streetcar which you can catch just north of your hotel goes to Broadview and then turns north up to the Broadview subway station (at Bloor). If you are going to be south of that, then you will need an Uber or taxi. I don’t know how long it would take.

I got a great rate to fly my sons home from studying abroad in Madrid into Toronto, so I’m going to drive the 4 hours there on a Wednesday in early May. Was thinking about heading up on Tuesday and getting a couple rounds in Tuesday afternoon and/or Wednesday morning.

What would be the best bets for a fun round between Detroit and Toronto? I was thinking about seeing if Glen Abbey had a twilight rate Tuesday evening, but I’m not seeing anything.

Roseland in Windsor for a golden age muni - ultra cheap, tons of fun, brilliant greens.

Tarandowah in the sticks - the spiritual home of The Duck Club, and home of the Tussle every June.

Lakeview in Mississauga once you get to Toronto for another golden age muni, but on much wilder land. It’s across the street from Toronto Golf Club - if you have any strings you can pull, play there instead…
