Roll Call: The Duck Club | Canadians, Beer and Cow Pastures

In my experience the longer you wait the easier it will be

Hey Ducks,

Slightly switching locations of golf trip planning, I’m putting this out there for comment and input from the flock. Not about Scotland…about Kelowna.

I have my trip planned out for September including all the top courses (in somewhat of an order) - predator, ridge, the rise, tower ranch, [insert course here], Sagebrush and then Tobiano.

[insert course here] is where I need some help. Unfortunately we can’t play Gallaghers Canyon because it’s booked for a private event leaving our options to Black Mountain, Harvest Club, Kelowna GCC, Okanagan GC.

Has anyone played any or all of these to comment on the best option? For context, the round at [insert course here] will be played as twilight following a morning round at Tower Ranch.

Would personally rank them both OGC courses, KGCC and then the other 2.

KGCC is more old style and different than a lot of those other courses you’re playing.

Also out of curiosity are you staying in a Kelowna the entire time or staying in Kamloops for Tobiano and at Sagebrush?

Kind of the wrong direction but Talking Rock would be my pick

We are staying at an Airbnb just south of Predator Ridge for the first three nights, then one night at Sagebrush, and the last night in a downtown Kamloops hotel (check out the nightlife of Kamloops to close the trip out I suppose). Next morning back to Kelowna for flight home.

So Okanagan courses are pretty fun? They were originally on the list until the crazy views and novelty of the rise won me over.

I would also consider playing tower ranch replay versus one of the other courses for a twilight. It is truly a stunning course. And there is a lot of elevation change that will make you want to go back out again after lunch on the patio overlooking the whole valley.

The Rise is a love / hate course. Many blind shots but crazy, crazy views.

Speaking of, any news on the family jaunt west this year? I need vacations on my schedule, and my calendar is sorely lacking fun right now!

Our group worked our way north and did Tower Ranch → OGC Bear → Both Predator → The Rise last year and had a great time. OGC Bear exceeded expectations but certainly didn’t surpass Tower Ranch, the back 9 there is special. The Rise is something else, I pray no one has to play that everyday.

I second everything in this post. Tower Ranch makes amazing use of the changes in elevation and, despite the drastic changes, the course is intuitive.

The Rise is the opposite. I was lucky enough to play with members my one time around it, otherwise I would have been lost. It does have spectacular views.

One of the dumbest courses I’ve played but also one of the most fun.

I have similar feelings about tobiano. Neat, cool, beautiful, but also weird in spots. Worth a visit, but for me the replay desire isn’t as high as I’ve had for other similar tier courses.

Thank you for all the comments and feedback. I knew you guys would come through.
I love the comments on “the rise” - at first, I didn’t have this on my plan, but the more I researched, I jus became intrigued. Plus…those views. When you’re coming from a flat golf course in southwestern Ontario, the courses with views just hit harder.

I’m digging the idea of playing replay at Tower Ranch. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hello! Welcome to 'Fuge, glad to see you’ve made it over from the dark side. Most important question: who is your favourite Duck Club Refugee and why is it me? I’ll hang up and listen.

Ts & Ps for @south600 and @cfrench

Well it very much depends on the situation.

If it’s crunch time, and I need a sick ORM package out together, it’s @cfrench

If my daughter is driving me nuts, and I need the “refuge” of a play date for her, it’s @South600

If i need the invaluable advice of an IT professional to ask me if I tried turning off, and then turning on my device, it’s you.

Really tough to make the call. We should probably play golf to once and for all answer this age old question.

Oh I like you already, your going to fit into the Refuge nicely.

Are you using membership elsewhere as a way in there? I’m scoping right now for late april, and would love to get a round in but it’s giving me the no vibes for non-member strapped types like myself.

For a memorable part of my youth my dad brought the whole family up from the lower mainland to Kelowna every summer for a golf tournament at KGCC. He called it the Ogopogo tournament?, no idea if that was the actual name but it seemed like a big deal at the time, and he loved going. We met up with a few of his friends and their families and all stayed together at a cool motel on the waterfront. Seemingly the best of times for everyone, kids, moms and dads. The dads went off each morning, had a blast, returned buzzed, and full of horror stories from their rounds haha. Us kids just lived in the water and at the beach, and the moms all got their sun bake tans on and free range parented. Good times.

I had a chance to go once or twice to the event and carry his bag and even got to meet Disco Dick Zokol there on one of those occasions.

Anyways as a close the loop idea I’d love to get around the course once, and see it for myself with my own golf eyes before it’s too late to share the memories with my old man. Maybe I should just go with this story and appeal to the guardians at the gate haha.

I’m full flip flopping on destination but am still locked in for the previously mentioned April 28th -30th weekend plan. Slight destination adjustment to Kelowna, fly in early friday, leave late sunday. Fellow e-town refugee @southafricancanuck is seeking spousal clearance currently but I’ve got a ready and willing highschool buddy who’s going to meet me on the other end. Hoping Victor’s joining but once I hear back on his progress I’m booking it. Hoping for 4+ rounds, everything is up in the air as far as specifics go otherwise.

We’re a twosome, possibly threesome, but happy to get a full tee time booking if you’ve got the itch.

I mean I do play at a Golf Canada rated course…that’s gotta count for something @scottyrp4 @cfrench

Ya - I’m a member at Saugeen. On the Kelowna GCC website it stated that non-member times could be arranged through a connection between head pros. But ultimately, we chose to play elsewhere

Alas, I’m already away for golf at the beginning of the month - going at the end as well would cause undue strife at home… still hoping to slide a Kelowna-ish trip in during the summer.
