You’re going to get a lot of feedback. Help us out: Where are you staying? Price range?
Edit: That said, Charleston Muni is a must. Playing during the week shouldn’t be too hard, but if you want to play on the weekend, see if a local can get you a tee time (cheaper). Times open up a week in advance so if there is a certain time you want to play, get on the week before and sign up.
If you are in with the C-Suite and know some pros that can put in calls for you: Yeaman’s Hall, Charleston Country Club, Briar’s Creek, and Cassique are the fancy privates. Bull’s Bay is a Strantz about an hour north.
Kiawah is about an hour from downtown and you know what is out there. Wild Dunes is another resort, but public option off peninsula but close enough to drive.
As far as other publics go, Stono Ferry, Charleston National, and Shadowmoss you can get on.
There are other options in the area, so if you have a specific question, ask away. We have plenty of Charleston guis on here to help
Can’t believe I missed a Cross Hill discussion. If the Mennonite bakery is still there, hit up some cinnamon rolls.
Lived in the non-lake area of Cross Hill for two years during high school and lived to tell about it. Twenty minutes to school and groceries. Our high school team practiced at Rolling S, a cow pasture, and played home matches at Musgrove. Talk about whiplash.
I’ve had good luck on the island with GolfPass. My old club Palmetto Hall was on their with a $59 deal last time I used it.
Try anything from Brown Golf. They bought Bear Creek, P Hall, and a few other clubs.
Hilton Head National or Old South ('ole lateral hazard) are both fun courses. Much closer to I-95 is a Fazio that came out of the ground like 1-2 days before the great recession. Hilton Head Lakes.
I go up about once a month to practice with a guy there, so I may go Friday and then get 9 or 18 in after. My wife has decided to go out of town Saturday or Sunday, so will definitely be going back then.
Rob puts on a ball striking clinic, especially with his hybrid off the tee. Both of us just couldn’t make any putts…wish I could have a few back on 11 and 12 for sure. Tough pins though.
18 is always a kick in the groin, but at least we had the breeze.
This NC guy will be down in your State this weekend. I’ll be staying at Cheraw State Park for a few nights and booked a solo tee time for Monday at 9:00 on the Tom Jackson State Park course. Come on out and show this NC guy how good the SC guys are.
I have! Played last fall on my way to Charleston. Think I paid $10 to walk 18 on a Friday morning. Conditions were about what you would expect for the price. Fun layout though-course had a lot more elevation change than I was expecting for that part of the state. There are some good holes on the front-back was a little tighter but not bad at all.
Would be interesting to know the backstory on Ellis Maples designing it and where the money and push came from to put a course there.
Headed to MB on Friday from Charlotte, looking for a place to swing by and knock it around a bit. Anybody ever played the City of Dillon Muni? Any other recommendations on my journey?
Depending on your route you will be within a few miles of Cheraw State Park. I’m a huge fan of that Tom Jackson design. It will be different than anything at the beach with more pine straw and some great Lake views. It is also an outstanding value. Just make sure you are not playing the Cheraw CC across the street.
Thanks! We will be staying on Isle of Palms -Charleston Muni sounds awesome, trying to decide if Kiawah is something we should do or not, I’ve never played it, sounds brutal, but maybe is worth doing once? I could get behind a round at Kiawah and maybe multiple at C Muni. I typically like the idea of playing something multiple times rather than trying lots of different spots…?
