Hi Folks.
Meldrum House (Aberdeenshire) member here. If anyone is ever in the north east and looking for a game or recommendations just give me a shout.
Cheers
Hey, another Fife golfer, and a member at sunny, burned-out Charleton
I just returned to golf after a very long break (I moved from Edinburgh to Fife years ago and stopped playing, go figure) but it’s great to be back.
It also turns out that golf is a lot easier as an adult beginner buying appropriate clubs and with youtube for advice than it was as a teenager handed your grandfather’s ancient Wilson Tour FG-17 blades and a “good luck, kiddo”.
My goal now is to reach a point where I can play with others without guilt, but for now I play at 7am so I can tee off on the first without looks of pity from sympathetic bystanders.
Hi All,
Currently living down in Cheshire but moving to East Lothian sometime in the summer. Any recommendations of affordable clubs to join in the area. Obviously loads of golf around but not sure what the best options are in terms of membership.
Cheers!
I moved to the states nearly 10 years ago but I grew up playing Craigielaw. It’s adjacent to kilspindie and a lovely links with great views off the coast and some excellent holes and great practice area. But my comparison for “affordable” is likely a lot different to yours given how expensive a club membership is in the US!
EDIT: my dad moved his membership from CL to Luffness a couple years back now, but it took him quite some time on a waiting list before he could join. Might also recommend a look at The Glenn in North Berwick - much more laid back but still a great track and got a ‘tale of two nines’ feel about it. Links along the cliffs and a bit of parkland in towards town. SUPER cheap to be an international member (200 quid if I remember right) so not sure if that also reflects local pricing.
Thanks mate, appreciate the help! Craigielaw looks lovely, and no waiting list. Looks like alot of the clubs on the coast have waiting list so will just have to see whats what when I get up there. Probably going to miss the ‘summer’ window too so waiting list wouldn’t be disastrous if it was to next spring. Will just have to ring around.
Luffness - says on the website if you wear shorts, then long socks are required. How is that still a thing!
You see Tourist Sauce Season 2? DJ found out the hard way, can’t remember exactly what club it was though.
It is Scotland though, so if you’re wearing shorts its a rare day!
My uncle is a member at Gullane and you can also get an off-season membership there with no waiting list if I remember right. They might limit your ability to play on Gullane #1 though.
Elie. Saw some folks have to do the pro shop socks purchase when I was there a couple years ago.
Honestly? I wouldn’t say no to doing it just to say I did it. Would rather people be laughing at my knee high socks that my bladed bunker shots.
Not sure what their membership options are, but of the courses I played on a golf trip, Dunbar felt like the course I’d most want to join. I think they’re building a driving range and updating the clubhouse, so it may a bit more spendy than others until it’s finished, but the course/club seemed fantastic during my visit.
Adding my name to the roll call. Play out of Clydebank & District, just outside Glasgow. Keen to travel around Scotland and experience the hidden gems. Heading to the Highlands in June, so planning Dornoch, Brora and Tain - if anyone’s in that vicinity hit me up!
Why Dunbar? I mean it looks sensational and great value compared to others along that stretch of coast.
I liked the course a lot more than Glen GC which I played the same day. I liked North Berwick more, but I assume that membership is in different tier. I also don’t think I’d want to join somewhere that’s so popular with tourists. Dunbar seemed like a good spot between those in that it’s a really good course that does have visitors checking it out, but it’s the third or fourth course you’d play in that region so it’s not overloaded with tour buses all summer. Also, nothing against Kilspindie, but I’d want a “par 70-72 championship” course as my home course (I’d still love to play Kilspindie a few times a year).
The afternoon I played it, I saw a foursome of what I assumed was grandpa, grandma, son, and grandson playing with their dog chasing them down the fairway. That perfectly fits my vision for what a Scottish club should be. That said, I didn’t play Gullane or some of the newer courses in East Lothian, so those might be better fits for what you’re looking for. Also, not sure where you live, but I assume some of the value comes from it being further from Edinburgh than others along the coast.
Love the coordination
Now that was a fun day for sure
Pandora, my love, was lit.
She was on
G’day! Not sue if this is the right place but I’m looking to play the Old Course during the week of 26-30 July. I’ve seen on the website that the singles queue is not currently a thing due to covid… does anyone know differently? If so, are there any takers to couple up for the ballot?
Cheers,
Charl
posted this in the GB/Ireland roll call but makes sense to post it here aswell I guess-
mega late to the party here but only recently discovered the NLU youtube channel during lockdown and been working my way through all their videos (especially addicted to tour sauce and strapped). discovered this place when browsing the website checking out their apparel etc. not much of a podcast listener i’m afraid as I prefer to listen to music whenever I have headphones on.
anyway, live in the North East of Scotland and been a member at Elgin GC since 2015 when I started to take golf abit more seriously as a hobby after playing casually with my dad’s second set throughout my 20’s. started at 24.5 and now down to 8.5 so certainly going in the right direction.
anyone is looking for a round at Elgin then feel free to give me a shout (or any of the other local courses).
