Roll Call - San Diego

No its just a free for all right now since COVID. You might be better off playing a non-city course.

People can also book outside of the one week window for a fee. It is such a free for all, that it is possible that early morning tee times are being scooped up and people are paying the fee to book more than a week out. It is very much a get lucky at 7:00 and hit the right button at the right time. Very difficult.

Thank you for this information.

Furthermore if it should happen that anybody needs 2 more at Coronado one morning next week (6/14 -6/18) please let me know.

I hate to add to the tourist posts in your Roll Call thread, but I’m in need of some advice.

My brother and I are locked in for flights and a house in San Diego Diego my Dad’s surprise 70th bday Sept 9-11th. The original plan was to play TP North… but that’s closed and the staff said they aren’t sure it will be open but then. The South is closed that weekend other than Saturday bc of a few one day tourneys (?). I’ve been creeping on the Advanced Non Resident online booking for the last month and all of a sudden Saturday tee times are just simply not being offered for September. I’ve been getting one a little before 7pm and obsessively refreshing and nothing shows up. Then randomly at some point in the following 24 hrs, a bunch of single tee times open up.

Does anyone have experience with the online booking system that can offer any insight? The date i need to book for is next Tuesday (90 days from September 11th) so I’m feeling that 11th hour stress.

If I can’t get in to TP, even though that is the entire purpose of the trip, what single course in the San Diego area will give us a great venue for my Dad’s celebration? We are set to pay $350 for TP South (!), so I’m not worried about price all that much.

Any and all help would be greatly and desperately appreciated!

It’s not 90 days yet until that date. You can’t see the Sept 9-11 tee times until June 9 probably.

And non residents only get a few tee times online. I would call them on June 9 if you can or check online.

Yeah I’ve been logging in the month periodically to see what tee times are looking like and testing out the process. My date to purchase is Tuesday 6/14 at 7pm. I’ve been getting in right at 7 to see what it looks like and nothing shows up right away. It randomly releases the 3 or 4 tee times for each day at some point in the 24hrs after they are supposed to be released… which sucks bc it all comes down to being lucky with when they happen to release them and someone happens across them first. I’ve been obsessing over these tee times and some dude is going to just log in and see the only available tee time while I’m on a call or something.

Hey all, just moved to town recently and looking for a good swing instructor. Does anyone have a recommendation? I’m in North Park, so someone who’s relatively local would be great. Thanks!

Cool, thanks for the suggestion

Thanks to everyone who helped with nuggets of info and offers to assist especially @JoeyKnish and @MrxSlowxFlow

I got on right at 7pm tonight for the release of tee times for the weekend we’re in San Diego Diego my Dad’s 70th and there are about 8 foursomes available. I picked one… got the message “This tee time no longer is available”… shit!! Clicked the next time up and got it! Checked back once I was done booking and only one foursome was left after 5 minutes. Stressful!

Everybody is telling me not to walk balboa park. Granted it’s mostly old men. I walked goat hill today. That was tough. Can anybody compare the two for me in terms of difficulty of walk.

My initial impression is that it’s comparable. Both are definitely walkable if you’re fit and able. For some reason I want to say goat Hill has more severe slopes, Balboa felt more gradual but still a good chunk of elevation change. Might be the yardage difference of the two courses.

Balboa is a hike but fun. Here’s a vote for walking it over riding in a cart.

Super pumped to see we’re getting a Crash Course episode at Coronado GC. In my time living in San Diego, that was probably my favorite course. It’s by no means a great course architecturally, but I love the location, the vibe, and the fact that I could post a good score pretty often. Just need to go at the right time to avoid a 5-6 hr round.

Couple of holes are a hike but overall its not a bad walk at all

Verdict: not a problem at all. Goat hill was way more difficult.

Hey Guys,

I will be in San Diego July 13-18th for a wedding. I am looking to book a tee time Friday July 16th. I am not from the area and don’t know it well but I am looking for suggestions on where to play? I don’t mind spending a little extra to play a good course. I’m just looking to book one foursome. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Where is San Diego are you staying? Where is the wedding?

That will help with recs.

I am staying in OB and my family is staying downtown. Wedding is at Bali Hai. Earlier the better on Friday. Don’t mind driving if we have to.

If you want to stay close…you can attempt to get a tee time at Coronado Muni. It is a hard tee time to get. But is a fun local favorite that plays right along San Diego Bay. The other local muni that is close is Balboa Park. Views of downtown, local flavor, nothing fancy, but your typical muni with some fun holes and some stupid holes. Easier to get on but not a given.

The rest of the courses are going to be a drive. And depending on how much you are wanting to pay, some real amazing courses, or some just quality local favorites.

Most Expensive Resort Courses (and quality)

Aviara (LPGA tour event location - pretty pricey)
The Grand (Also pretty pricey)
Maderas
Omni La Costa Resort (used to hold the PGA Tour WGC match play long ago)

Cheaper option Courses

Encinitas Ranch (Up the coast a ways with some ocean views)
Steele Canyon (Due east of Downtown - outside the city)
Riverwalk (close to you, but not my favorite place to play, iffy conditions)
Goat Hill (long drive, it is a short course with par 3/4 that is pretty fun and popular)

Plenty of other courses out there, others can chime in, but those are the ones that come to mind.
