Roll Call - San Diego

Hey all. Sorry for last minute post, but I am in SD today and tomorrow and have one spot to fill at TP. My business partner had to bail on me. 1130 am on North today. If you can join me, send me a PM.

@LoneStar I Played TP South this morning. Course was in great shape overall and it seems like they cut the rough down a bit from my last round. It’s still thiccc and can easily affect your shot if not struck well. . If you’re really wayward it can be deeper. Here’s some pics

woah buddy, awesome!! The end of March can’t come fast enough.

This is a question for anyone but playing it so recently you might know, I was wondering how the tee selection works? From the sound of the website it seems like they are pretty strict about it(as in playing the correct one). Our group will have a lady, a 30, and a 20 handicap and then I am currently around an 8. Was wondering how most people go about deciding which tees to play on a trip like this. When we go play for casual fun, I just play up and we all tee off from the same. A place like Torrey though, I want to be able to test myself as much as possible because that seems like the most fun, I think?

Nobody will prevent you from playing any tee you or anyone else chooses. Regardless of who I get paired up with, I pay from the tee of my choosing and don’t feel the need to play with other people if they choose somewhere else. Torrey Pines is very laidback about this, at least with the locals. Stuffy out-of-towners might raise a fuss but they’re just asking for a fish taco in their tailpipe after the round. I would say you guys each play from where you will get the most fun, whether that’s different tees in the same group or everyone moves up to a specific tee.

But if you play with me and you choose the back tee…and you’re not making at least bogey on every hole? I’m silently judging you. Torrey is hard enough without you having a 4-iron into every green. The biggest thing is to choose it based on driving distance.

Taupe is 280-300
Green is 250-280
White 220-250
Gold/Yellow Sub 220

correct the only tee you need permission for is the tourney tees the rest have at it!

Non-golf related but hoping the locals can lend some advice - I’m in the beginning stages of planning a family (wife and 1yo) trip to the San Deigo area this fall. We’re interested in staying close to the beach (walking distance preferable) but also within driving distance of most of the places of interest. Any suggestions on what areas we should be looking in for a place to rent? Mission Beach was the first place that caught my attention.

Secondly, how late into the year does the weather realistically stay warm enough to be on the beach/in the water?

In the water? I’d say early October - middle of October at the latest. It’s warm into November but nobody is going into the water for long by that point.

Mission Beach is good yeah but it’s very touristy. For the sake of giving another option, maybe think about Del Mar, a bit less spring break crowd and more family oriented. San Diego is very quick in terms of a car (outside of work traffic), I’d say you can stay as far North as Del Mar and be okay. If you stay in Del Mar just try to be close to the 5/56 merge and you’ll be able to get anywhere within 20-30 minutes. I’d say anywhere between Del Mar and Mission Beach should be okay. Pacific Beach is bro city so If you and the wife want to do some shots while some 20 year old watches your baby by the bar, that’s your pick.

This is where Del Mar is

Hello San Diego people, I’ll be down in SD on Friday and am looking to play that morning. I went back through the thread to check out the recommendations and have narrowed it down to three - if could only pick one, which would you choose?

Torrey North for $160
Maderas for $130
Steele Canyon for $130
Other recommendations are appreciated as well!

Maderas is punching the greens this week fyi. I would say Torrey North.

If you can get a tee time Encinitas Ranch is fun!

After asking for and receiving so much great advice, thought I would report back here on my trip and give some thoughts about a few things for San Diego trips as a whole.

The three courses we ended up playing were Torrey South, Oak Glen at Sycuan Golf Resort, and a little par three course called Colina Park Monday morning before driving back.

Overall it was a great trip. We got in fairly late on Friday night so we grabbed some dinner and pretty much just chilled at the house. The Airbnb we got was in the Normal Heights neighborhood so we pretty much ate and drank around that area the whole time especially when no one wanted to drive.

Saturday we headed to Torrey, grabbed some breakfast close to where we were staying and off we went. And let me just say WOW. After leaving a tad late and spending a good bit in the pro shop, we only had about 15 min on the range before heading to the first tee. What a round it was. It was the first time in my life that I played 18 holes, didn’t even score very good which I could not have cared less about, and just didn’t want to leave after we were done. We probably stood around the starters stand for a good 20 min before heading to the car.

Sunday was the Sycuan Golf Resort and that course was very pleasant as well. We played 18 and then headed over to the casino for some dinner and gambling.

I know this is probably way more detail than anyone but myself cares to read but I would love to discuss any of it if anyone is interested.

A couple other comments: to do over again, I would try and make time for at least a few hours at the beach. The closest we got to that was Torrey and the rest of our trip was mainly more inland. Second, I am definitely “overweight” and got a cart at Torrey, which was not cart path only so that was great. With that being said, if you are not a regular walker while playing golf that is NOT the course to try it on based on how we all felt that night after our round. For us Arizona folks, that is not a very walkable course imo.

Colina is in surprisingly good shape for what it is. First course I took my daughter to. She played 3 holes. It was perfect.

Anybody have any intel on Native Oaks? Just moved to town and my buddy got us a tee time there later this week

Used to be called woods valley was bought out a year ago, changed the name to Native Oaks. They are putting a decent amount of money into it. I played it about a week ago (only the front 9 as part of a high school golf match). Was is average to good shape. It is a little bit of a weird course. Some blind shots, can’t see landing areas, hazards that stretch further. Some holes are EXTREMELY TIGHT, some are wide open. Has a vibe of just not flowing. And is is out there depending on where you are located.

Depending on standards, it is absolutely worth it. Won’t win any awards, but better then other places around town. (although i don’t know the cost, I didn’t fork over greens fees)

Hey San Diegians, my wife and I are heading to SD from Iowa the last week in June. Looking to get a round in at the best course we can. Trying to land a tee time at Torrey but so far no luck there so looking for a plan B.

Courses I’ve been considering based on what I’ve read:

Aviara
Maderas
La Costa
Barona Creek
Encinitas Ranch
Coronado

I was leaning toward Aviara but didn’t see much talk about it on this thread so was just looking to get some opinions! Not too concerned about the cost or distance from where we are staying (close to Coronado). Just looking to play the best course we can!

Also, food and drink recommendations would be great too while we’re in town.

Thanks!

Aviara is good and look for their details. We played right before the KIa tourney there and it was in rough shape but might be better now.

Def would rank these:

Coronado
Barona Creek
Goat Hill
Aviara

Hey dudes, I’m headed out your way next week. Original plan was to attend the US open practice round on June 16. That plan is dead so instead I’ll just go play.

My question is: how does one secure a morning tee time at Balboa park? I keep watching when times become available at 7 pacific time but I never see anything before noon. Are the earlier blocks reserved for locals?
