Roll Call: Pittsburgh and Western PA

Definitely echo everything summarized above,
But would throw Quicksilver in the “quality public course” column. I live in Robinson Twp. and the Q is only about a 10-15 drive which makes it very accessible. I can vouch for the area as well as a place to live. I work right next to the airport so it’s super convenient for that, but I also travel a lot for work and to visit family so access to the airport is clutch. Getting to the city is very easy as well as you can avoid the tunnel and get downtown within 10-15 minutes at any given time.

As far as private courses go, we belong to Shannopin CC which is a great club. Definitely not in the OCC,
/Fox Chapel/Nevillewood category but firmly on the mid-tier clubs in the area. Course is a bit quirky but it’s a well-run club, conditioning is always great and they put together a really nice schedule of events throughout the entire season. For the price, it’s tough to beat if joining a club is on your radar.

Depending on where branch is located living in Weirton, WV making the drive to the city really isn’t too bad plus cost of living is substantially less. Also on the airport side of the city so no real traffic for that. As for golf, Williams Country Club in Weirton is such a great value. It lacks some of the amenities other clubs have but for a pure golf course it is second to none in that price point.

We offered a “member for a day” rate last year. I’d call sometime to see about getting on. If that doesn’t work I’m sure I could get you out there sometime.

Appreciate it. I know the WPGA does the play days there also during the season. Gonna try those out also

Williams is a fantastic old school golf course. Not sure I’d want to walk it all that often but it’s a great place.

Another one that I completely missed in my first post…

If you got the game for it, Hannatown GC has some absolute sticks that play there. Home club to Goetz (number 1 seed at this years amateur) Palmer Jackson, Sean Knapp and it’s also pretty affordable

Quick question regarding the neighborhoods and where to live. Context - my wife is from Sewickley and wants us to move to the Pittsburgh area eventually (Currently live in a suburb of DC in Northern VA).

Why is it Sewickley doesn’t get recognized as a great spot? I ask because it seems nice with two really nice country clubs (Allegheny and Sewickley Heights), but doesn’t tend to get mentioned often?

Thanks for the information!

Sewickley is definitely a nice area and Allegheny is a an awesome course/club. But I will say from a commute perspective it’s not ideal being that far west of the citt

Sewickley and the surrounding area is a great spot. It’s just one of those places that doesn’t fall in the North hills/South Hills/east end debate which is why it gets overlooked. Plus, compared to the rest of the area, Sewickley/Sewickley Hills/ Sewickley Heights is pretty spendy to live in. They dont let riff raff like me in those areas

Anyone recently contact the Field Club about what initiation and dues are? Looking it up on Google just returns results that are all over the map. I know at least 1 or 2 people who are members but don’t want to pry and they’re a good but younger than me so I’m sure on a different tier

Thanks for the context. It seems like a great (but expensive) area to raise a family, but a little small with not a whole lot going on in their little down town.

Appreciate the feedback.

Courses not to overlook include:

  • Shannopin (already mentioned)
  • Hannastown (already mentioned)
  • Longue Vue (already mentioned)
  • Green Oaks (solid, with a few dumb holes)
  • Chartiers (fun course, solid membership, recently redid some greens, bunkers I think)
  • Diamond Run (if you don’t care about walking )
  • Wildwood (not my fave, but… it’s okay).

I’m bad at geography so I have no idea where these places are. Thank goodness Waze does.

Based on my research, it seems like the private clubs in Mount Lebo + Upper Saint Clair are expensive, but does anyone have any insight into how the courses are between Nevillewood, Saint Clair, or any of the other clubs in that area?

South Hills Country Club isn’t terrible, a couple of quirky holes but overall is in good shape. A buddy is a member there and he also likes the overall membership and is a good family environment too

I don’t know what Westmoreland CC costs, but it may be worth consideration. Not far from Hannastown.

Played South Hills one time.
Would quit golf before I played that as my home course.

St. Clair is going to be hard to get into unless you have a connection. I would look at Valley Brook and Chartiers.

Valleybrook is the shit. I may be bias but they got 27 holes and you never need a tee time.

I guess i should say Valleybrook is only about 8 min from St Clair and cheaper with as for mentioned 27 holes
