Very helpful thank you!
I would rate power ranch (post greens) ahead of lone tree IMO. I have not played Piston Butte yet.
This has to be one of the worst golf course names I’ve heard in a while.
If you’re searching, it’s Poston Butte just fyi
Power Ranch is actually our morning round that day. Name sucks. Course is fine. Conditions are good (historically)
Poston Butte it is, then. Thanks all.
Would throw out there to check out Longbow if that’s fits the area/budget, won’t be much more than Poston Butte and is probably the same distance from Power Ranch. It’s the best East valley course from an architecture standpoint, the best/most playable version of desert golf.
This is reassuring, we’re playing there Friday.
Papago Thursday so this is rounding into a nice little trip!
That is a nice set up! Not sure where you’re staying, but if you’re driving a long way for Poston Butte, I’d suggest considering to go play Southern Dunes instead.
Weve hit southern dunes the last few years - that + the duke has always made for a real fun day.
Staying near downtown (?) Gilbert I think
I love Poston Butte. Same architect as where the LGPA event is headed but half the cost. And not as demanding as Southern Dunes.
Plus, you get to see a Federal prison on the drive.
the only Power Ranch slander I’ll accept is it costs too much, but yes the greens are new. Still very firm, not “fast” by any stretch of the imagination but not slow. Probably 8-9 ish on stimp.
Las Colinas is extremely mid. Poston Butte is fabulous and you can hit the driver almost anywhere on the planet.
Power Ranch is fine. It’s definitely way over priced like 90 percent of the golf in the valley now. It’s a pretty boring design on a flat piece of land surrounded by houses, but it’s in good shape typically. The difference between Bear Creek and Power Ranch is negligible. Both meh designs in good shape and whose greens fees hurt my wallet for what we get.
I would argue the PR green complexes have a bit more character than Bear Creek, but yes - both wayyy overpriced for what they are.
My friend tried to convince me on Johnson Ranch/Highlands and when we arrived, found out only 9 holes were open as they had early closed 9 for overseed. The 9 mountain holes we played sucked and I’m good on that place forever.
I am quite glad we saved two fellow Nesters from having to experience that place and Wiz is correct Longbow is probably the best option on the east side.
Or get someone with a private hookup to get you on Encanterra
I’ll be in PHX next week ahead of the Tumbleweed, anyone want to play Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday?
Poston Butte is pretty decent. The island green hole is dumb and incredibly out of place as all such holes are in the desert, and it is an absolute bitch in a three-club cross wind, which is not at all unusual out there is central AZ. But I suppose it looks nice driving in.
San Tan/Johnson Ranch is awful. As @Waffles said, the hilly nine aspires to being decent but they built the homes way too close and the flat nine is a collection of the most boring golf holes you’ve ever played in your life, where they also built the homes way too close. I cannot believe I drove so far to play that course. Come to think of it, it may be what finally put me off my “explore the courses I haven’t played in Arizona” project.
I’m game for Friday.
Anyone free for a round this weekend? I have a troon card and an access pass to share if anyone wants to join me on Sunday for a twosome. 136 for lookout mountain124 for Estrella. Tee times around 930 ish
Any locals want to play in the Tumbleweed? We had a spot open up for Sunday 3/9 at Aguila. Tee times starting at 8am.
