Cancelling mine rn then!

Looking for input from locals. Working on a trip to Scottsdale. Papago vs Talking Stick - O’odham. What’s the choice and why?

Is this just you or a group?

Is the group really into architecture? Coore/Crenshaw designs?

Here’s the thing, O’odham is a better course, but it takes some time to reveal itself. It’s not especially pretty. 98% of people (and that’s probably underestimating it) just won’t get it the first time they play it. You have to go around it a few times to kind of get how the angles set up, how the bunkers guard the best angles to greens, all the nerdy shit. The first time around, for most people, it’s just a pretty flat featureless course (apart from the few holes with obvious forced features like OB which a lot of people hate).

Papago isn’t as good but it is a perfectly solid muni. Not the most beautiful golf course in Phoenix, but ina nice spot with some nice hills to look at, views of the skyline as well. It’s just better for a one round experience.

Is this true for everyone? No, I think it is totally possible to get O’odham and like it right away. I just know that most people don’t, especially if they don’t go in kind of knowing what it’s all about and wanting to have that experience.

Thanks for the info! Very helpful. It’s a golf group of varying skill levels - after business meeting.

Looking for desert course vibes (views, condition, not stuffy). That tells me grinding a Coore/Crenshaw at TS is probably not what we are targeting.

Any recommendations on desert course with good vibes? Preferably < $250 for those in the group not wanting to shell out $$$.

I’ve played the big ones (TPC, Troon North, Grayhawk). We tried to get WKP Saguaro but it’s already booked 90 days out.

Yeah, Papago isn’t really a desert course. A muni built in the 60s with all that vibe entails. The renovation a decade or so ago took out a ton of trees so it doesn’t have quite as much of that tree-line parkland feel anymore, but still, not a desert course.

Assuming you want to stay on the east side since you’re playing after a meeting.

The other course at We-Ko-Pa, which is called Cholla, is actually even more of a classic desert style course, and is really good. It too is probably booked up but I would highly recommend it.

Also out that way are Eagle Mountain and SunRidge Canyon. Not WeKoPa level golf experiences, but if it is desert golf you seek you’ll find it at both places. Perfectly fine courses, SunRidge is tougher. Both have a lot of elevation change and have nice views that would be even better without all the homes everywhere.

I also don’t hate Legend Trail which is more north Scottsdale.

A wild card is Longbow. desert style course out in Mesa. A little further than the Scottsdale courses but has the benefit of not having homes around it.

Eagle Mountain might be a good fit. Very welcoming off the tee, but get desert golf with good views and not too far from Scottsdale. Not cheap, but should fall under $250

Thanks! I’ll check those out.

Thanks for the input. We are looking at Longbow now.

On a separate note, anyone interested in playing afternoon of 2/28 (Camelback Ambiente) or morning of 3/1 (somewhere)? Open to private clubs if anyone has access.

I haven’t seen it discussed much in here but I’m a fan of Longbow. You feel like you’re out in the desert but it’s not a “desert course” in the sense of being super penal target golf. Decent bar/restaurant (depending on weather, it’s mostly outside) and have never had any issues with pace or conditions.

Kind of last minute, but I have 1 spot available at Cave Creek GC tomorrow 2/15 at 10:32am
Edit: Dropped the last spot

Anyone free next Tuesday? 3 spare spots to play with me at Talking Stick O’Odham @ 10:27 still on the website.

Hi AZ crew - looking for any thoughts/feedback from anyone who has played Las Colinas and San Tan Highlands? (Just south of Gilbert-ish area)

Promise I’ve used the search feature but am not seeing anything! Basically looking to choose between the two for an afternoon round with some fellow Minnesotans coming down for a quick trip. Thanks in advance for any comments!

Neither are exceptional plays.

Las Colinas is a pretty standard neighborhood course that routes through a development. I don’t particularly remember any of the holes being memorable or being overtly offensive. When I last played it the conditions were always so-so, but that was years ago.

Highlands/Johnson Ranch is a complete no go for me. The mountain nine used to be pretty fun but they houses are way to close to the course and the conditions have always been extremely poor.

Keeping you in the same area id recommend would be Power Ranch (I believe they just got new free greens), Lone Tree, or Poston Butte
