SD is great and being in Tukee makes it more reasonable for me than most, but it’s still a drive. Would be nice if there was decent golf within ten minutes given the golfer population density here.
Is Whirlwind the closest good course?
But that one is probably overpriced.
Yeah Whirlwind would be the closest option (only ten minutes from my house as in right off of the 202). It’s expensive though for what it is and they do the same thing as SD with their range. No buckets or anything, just a day pass that is unreasonably priced.
If I’m practicing I go to Dobson Ranch. If I’m playing after work I go to Legacy. I am considering the Arcis card though so I can do Raven. Discounted golf and free range balls with the card. If I have enough time with work then I’ll do it, but I know when I worked at Raven their range closes a bit early. If it’s still the same then it’s not worth it as I won’t be able to practice much.
Bumping this meet up as it looks like we are able to book tee times online.

How early does everyone want to start? Thinking we book 3 foursomes, and try to get 3 more participants.
I’m fine with anytime.
Was thinking maybe afternoon so we can have the course to ourselves and grab some beers afterwards.
otherwise early AF.
I’m partial to early tee time. But I have the whole day clear so anything works for me
Anything works for me, I have it blocked off as well.
I’m open all day as well. I’m like 75% certain I’ll be healthy enough to play, so don’t plan around me since I’m not all in (s/o Kokrak) yet. If I join though I’ll make whatever time you select work out.
Played Lookout Mountain for the first time today and really enjoyed it.
It’s definitely quirky and a little “all over the place” for lack of a better term. I had 6 birdies and only 4 pars which I think is a pretty accurate reflection of the course. A few of the tee shots don’t make any sense (as noted in this thread). But I thought the greens were cool and found myself playing different approach shots throughout.
Looking forward to getting back out and playing it less blind. I’ll definitely be laying off driver a few more times.
*should note that fairways are in pretty rough shape right now
That’s the range schedule I have.
I’ve got the Arcis membership, and it can’t be beat if you’re hitting the range a few times a week. They raised the prices this January and I considered dropping it, but when I looked at the cost of going to dobson instead it didn’t make sense (17 dollar large buckets lol). On top of that having a grass range is infinitely better than mats.
I think the before work window is best if you can swing it, since the range opens at sunrise.
Yeah grass makes a big difference compared to mats. That schedule looks similar to how it was when I worked there. If I can swing mornings then it’s definitely worth it. I think mornings will become more realistic a couple times a week moving forward so that may be the way to go.
The one thing that has really kept me from being excited about practicing at Raven is the lack of short game practice area, though that’s tough to find at any course in the Valley.
The chipping green is tiny. They did put new sand in the bunker last year so it’s decent, but I usually go to Kenny mac for short game practice.
They have a very large chipping green and a solid bunker. If no one else is using it you can practice 40-60 yds too which is nice because the only other spot I can think of with that much room is southern dunes.
It’s an interesting course to be sure.
Almost all courses, even ones that aren’t especially good, I think I find I come to appreciate more in some way over multiple plays. Lookout Mountain might be an exception to that because, while there are some decent/good holes there that I like there are enough weird or awkward ones that really don’t ever get better.
But given that it is still a place where you can get out in the afternoon for less than $50 and hit all kinds of different shots, I’ll go back.
I’m wide open that day, super pumped to meet everyone!
Alright, I went ahead and booked three sets of tee times starting at 10:03am. That way everyone can sleep in a little longer, and also gives anyone the option to play another 9 or 18 holes after if they’d like.
$26+ tax/person due at the course when checking in.
Awesome, looking forward to it. Hit balls today for the first time and I feel okay, so I’m upgraded 100% in now.
I just signed up for Arcis Prime. For $80/month, it doesn’t take much to get your money’s worth and then some. Looking forward to seeing you out there!
Would anyone want to play golf this weekend?
Wild the price has gone up that much. When I first joined, I think it was 50 and they bumped me up to 70/month in January. I guess it may have been a little too good of a deal before. Still need to get out to McDowell and ocotillo to try them out now that they added them.
I played 18 today after work and greens are still recovering from the aeration but the rest of the course was solid condition for the time of the year. Let me know if you want to get out and play one day.
