Ocala, FL here, about 1.5 hours from Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville for the out of towners. I am a Superintendent at a private golf course and play regularly. Give me a shout if you’re in the area.
Took my buddies to WP9 in the morning and played Deltona Golf Club in the afternoon. I had played WP9 before and knew they would like it, but I had never seen Deltona so I was pretty nervous as to what we would find. Not to mention it sits in the middle of a working class neighborhood, and I started questioning if I’d made a big mistake on the drive in.
Turns out Deltona was a ton of fun. Everyone had a blast - from 10 handicappers to 36. Yes the greens needed a little work - mid-level muni conditions. But the wonderful elevation changes with huge waste areas and bunkers was like nothing I’d seen in Orlando. Bobby Weed renovated this place a while back and he did an awesome job. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
FYI: I have never played a yellow ball before, and I can’t believe I am saying this but I might consider it the next time back. Finding a white ball in the waste areas you are bound to end up in, is not easy - especially in the late afternoon or early morning sun.
Played our “captain’s weekend” at Disney Magnolia for first round pick in our annual buddies trip this morning. Finished tied so we’re rolling into WP9 for an E-9.
Just started playing again after a long hiatus. Actually in Orlando now, but Original Westside from Jax. I am an attorney with Farah and Farah, and moved down here May 2017 to handle our Central Florida litigation. Lived in Eagle Landing and played many courses in Jax through the years. Still up there periodically for work and all family still there. Soooooooooo many courses around Central Florida that I felt compelled to start playing again
This thread makes me miss the city beautiful. Being able to play and practice 5x a week for a few years was great. I don’t miss Bermuda grass though. Wish I would have realized WP9 was as nice as it is earlier in my time there and I would have played there weekly.
Hey, Fellas:
Just letting you know that the Royal and Ancient Company of Dishonorable Golfers, US SE Section, is holding their Shut tournament at Grand Cypress 6/1-2. If anyone is interested in playing the event and/or joining the Section, PM me.
Just moved into Baldwin Park area from Seattle and always in for a weekend run or a quick walk after work. Hoping to learn of some new places in the area.
Congratulations on being near the Baldwin Park Publix. That, my friends, is L-I-V-I-N.
Very excited to have Publix back in my life after some years on the West coast. My girlfriend has just been introduced and is smitten
I lived at 1319 lake Baldwin lane before moving back to kc. That pizza place on new broad street is probably the best pizza in orlando. Baldwin is such a beautiful community, just make sure you don’t leave anything on your porch. I had 2 bikes that were locked up stolen right off my porch.
If you need a good gym, spectrum is right down the road and they are expensive but by far the best gym i’ve ever been to.
That is one building over from where I am at haha excited to try the pizza place now. Will report back with my takes
Hello all, new to forum and community but big fan of NLU and would love to meet some like minded folks. Currently have a home in Winter Park but working in Ft. Lauderdale for the next year or so. I make it back up typically every other weekend but would love to meet up and play at Dubs or WP9. I’m fairly new and still higher handicap but I promise not to slow anyone down!
Also, if anyone has any recommendations near FLL I would love to hear them, only checked out Jacaranda and Plantation Preserve so far, but honestly SFL golf doesn’t measure up to Orlando, to many private CC courses and overpriced mediocre publics
Crooked Spoon has a banging lobster grilled cheese
So we just went to book our annual Orlando golf trip, and Tee Times USA is saying that Grand Cypress NSE is closing for good this fall??? Any locals have any insight here?
UPDATE: I emailed then yesterday, and can confirm that Grand Cypress will be closing in September. They will be undergoing a development project that will take at least 2.5 years. There will be 18 holes remaining, that will only be open to guests of Hyatt Regency. The rep I talked to could not confirm, but rumor has it the New Course will be the only one left when it’s all said and done.
So, it sounds like the bulldozers are warming up. Had a lot of good memories there, sad to see it go.
We’ll give it a proper send off with our RACDG Shut in June!! @JDinDelray @The_Cad_Says @Twirls4TheGirls @bwaldrep @2down
Good news is, if they’re tearing it down in September, they won’t have to aerate it all summer, possibly.
I dropped this in the ‘Where are you traveling?’ thread, maybe I’ll have more luck here.
Coming to MCO on Saturday and leave around 5:30 pm Sunday. Unfortunately our hotel is near Disney Springs. I could Uber somewhere, but will WP9 be absolutely overrun on a Sunday morning? Any recommendations in the area closer to the hotel. Obviously that’s a super touristy area, so the options may be underwhelming and pricey. Thanks.
WP9 won’t be too bad, played there last Sunday morning and we walked on as a twosome, but it will be an absolutely terrible drive. To quote @Twirls4TheGirls “I think in hell you just have to drive on I-4 for eternity.”
Falcon’s Fire is only about 7 miles from Springs; it’s a Reese Jones course but will only set you back $40 on Sunday morning (Non-resident). All the other courses will either be Disney/Resort ($$$) or not very good.
You got guys you playing with already?
No sir, just laying over down there for work and I try to play on my layovers as much as possible.
