Roll Call: Omaha/Lincoln

Great. Thanks. Looking forward to the walk.

Where are you coming from?

Indian Creek in Omaha is a ā€œnice courseā€ where they play a KFT event. But it’s not particularly unique. If you like weirder stuff you’re never going to see elsewhere then Bayside (15 min north of I-80 at Ogallala) is probably another decent stop. Sandy soil. Huge bunkers, big slopes, some wild greens. Very fun front 9, maybe gets a bit too weird on the back but a good time. Terrible walk though, def a cart course.

While not at the levels of Wildhorse or Awarii Dunes, Kearney there is a nice public course called Meadowlark Hills. I’ve always been a fan of the course.

Coming from Florida via Ireland. Heading to Oregon. Not exactly sure of dates, just hitting the road toward the end of May and seeing how it goes, but thinking I will spend at least two days in your fine state. Play 36 one day. So either Bayisde or Awarri Dunes might work or else just do Wild Horse twice.

If u are from Ireland u will like Neb golf more than Florida golf. Awarii, Wildhorse, and Bayside is a solid itinerary for the I-80 trip.

If u are driving back from Oregon also I would highly advise maybe a Hwy20/Hwy 12 trip back w the Prairie Club and Tatanka as stops to make. Frederick Peak is really good too but don’t skip the Prairie Club if u are that close.

Just my 2 cents, I’d go wild horse twice in place of bayside or awarri. Both are very average, and pale in comparison to wild horse

Chipping in my two cents after reading some of the replies. Working east-to-west and staying primarily along I-80, a solid itinerary for public courses would be: Omaha (Indian Creek), Lincoln (Woodland Hills), Kearney (Awarii Dunes), Gothenburg (Wild Horse), North Platte/Brule (Bayside). Not sure exactly how many stops you’re planning to make but I’d rank these options as: Wild Horse (can’t skip), Indian Creek, Bayside, Awarii Dunes, Woodland Hills.

If you’re able to find tee times and willing to venture off I-80 a bit, about 2 hours north of North Platte is Prairie Club, which has two of the best public courses in the state. I’d put those two courses right up with Wild Horse.

I’d absolutely advocate for 2 rounds at Wild Horse if you have the time (yes it’s that good).

Is Iron Horse worth playing again? I know there were some issues the past few years. Gonna have a buddy in town and want to play somewhere decent he’s never played before.

My group usually plays it 2-3 times a year. Haven’t yet this year but had no issues last year. They are just extremely strict, and vocal, about no outside booze and how you will be kicked out or shot on site if they catch you.

@Krupskimj where have you taken your buddy to play in town before already?

I think I shared it a while back. But go browse their Google reviews and look at their owner or someone that works there fighting with people.

Seen that before and had a good laugh knowing full well I’ve probably had a conversation with the person behind those comments. We just honestly haven’t had any issues because we all know how it is there. It’s also hilarious how hard they cracked down on outside booze and now their is a liquor store directly across the street and you drive within 50 yards of it on the cart ride from hole 1 to 2.

He just lives out in Central Nebraska so he’s played most courses in town. Wanted to get out to Quarry but obviously that’ll have to wait a year

Central Neb. So like Seward or York.

If he’s just interested in trying a new course and not necessarily interested in the best golf experience, sure Iron Horse is ā€œfineā€. In the Omaha metro there’s quite a few other courses I’d rather spend $75 (or less) and have a better experience.

I know this place can be a bit of an echo chamber, and my thoughts on iron horse are similar. Its okay; nothing special. Even if its’s a place I’ve already played, I would prefer Indian, Benson, or hell make the trek over to CB for Bent Tree, over Iron Horse.

I play Benson a lot and we’ve played Indian before. I do love Bent Tree but I heard that course was in terrible shape last year and it’s also an even longer drive for him coming from out west. Really, we just get a kick out of playing new places together around the state and want to knock some more off.
