Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) and localized ice cream debates (Part 1)

Damn if you ever make this offer again I will definitely take you up on it. Money is too tight right now for me, but I would love to play that course at some point. I am in stow and usually play Windmill Lakes in Ravenna. If you ever make it over in this area I’d love to play.

It’s been a while since I played IR. I played just after the new owner bought it and was in the process of redoing all the bunkers and building out the retention pond to the right of 14. A shame how the previous owners let that place rot. I’m happy to hear it’s in better hands now. Bummed about that creek on 16, as that added strategy to the hole.

It’s been a while since I’ve been back in the Oxford area. The wife and I, a Miami Merger, used to hit up Mac n’ Joes during student breaks. Haven’t made one of those trips since the kids arrived.

Me and my college roommates (3 recently started playing all from Dayton and me and the other are longtime golfers from Cincinnati) are getting together for Memorial Day weekend to play around at Cassel Hills. I’m not familiar with Dayton golf so for those from the area or have played the course what’s the 411? I also realize because of the Holiday it’ll be packed lol

Cassel hills is two completely different nines. The front is pretty easy and flat, the back is a little tougher for me than it should be because of the awkward hills and smaller greens. The back nine is a lot older. Greens are usually in good shape for a muni. Overall, not too tough of a course with a pretty laid back vibe. Get some wings and beers at frickers afterwards if you need a place to go.

Akron here. No private memberships but I think NEO has some underrated public tracks available

Absolutely there are some gems up that way! Some of my favorite public places near Akron:

Windmill Lakes (Best pro shop around)
JE Good Park (Fun layout and a challenge)
Seven Hills Country Club (Usually in fantastic shape with fast greens)
Sable Creek (Family owned country course with 27 holes)

Accurate descriptions.

Ellsworth Meadows doesn’t get mentioned enough. Always great conditions albeit a bit wet.

Kensington out near Youngstown was quite fun but is a track that needs more than one round as some of the angles aren’t known until you get to the fairway.

Sugar Bush in Garrettsville is always a nice test.

There are a couple that I haven’t played but want to. Pine Hills and the Quarry being the top 2. Haven’t been to Shale Creek either.

Clearview down in Canton is a national historic site being the first black owned and designed course in the country. Only 5800 yards and basically built in a field but for the historic nature I want to see it

I used to play Sable Creek a lot during high school and college. I remember it being pretty decent.

Next Saturday, June 15, I am playing in a scramble at Twin Oaks in Covington, KY. I need two more golfers. The golf, food, and some beer is free. I THINK we tee off at 8:00 a.m. and we usually finish golf around 2:00. Yes, a very long round but we have to wait on a couple of tees throughout the day. Anyway, I am also posting this in the Kentucky Roll Call so please be quick on getting back to me. The first two responses are in and a waitlist will be done for all others. Reply to this thread. Thanks!

I’d join you but I’m already signed up for an event that Saturday morning. :frowning:

Darn. We could have used your short game. And your iron play. And your tee balls.

Down to possibly needing ONE golfer. I am waiting to hear from someone later today. If you are interested in playing, please reply to this thread so I can put you down as first alternate.

I’m pretty new to Columbus and no membership for me. If you ever need a fourth let me know.

This has now been filled. If anything changes, I will post in the thread. Thanks!

Lake County based. Usual playing partners are bowing out for health, family and time issues. Looking to the Refuge for some new connections. Weekend muni golf around Northeast Ohio.

Hey I’m based in Northeast Ohio as well (west side of Cleveland). We’ll have to try and work something out. This coming weekend won’t be good for me but maybe next one

Funny enough, I’m a Lake County guy as well. Small world. Welcome to the Refuge, Dean! Where you usually play?

I figured this was a good place to ask this. I grew up in NE Ohio and lived there for 36 years. My oldest son was born in Columbus and was a year old when we moved to Minnesota. Then, we moved to Baltimore two years ago.

Anyway, he’s attending a camp this week, and when they let him pick out a prize, to my absolute horror, he picked this. I need to get that thing out of my house.
