Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) and localized ice cream debates (Part 1)

We had a great day on Monday…and raised over $60k to fund research to cure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy!

Shout out to @Soly and @MerchCzar for proving prizes for the No Laying Up challenge which we made $1k on alone.

Playing Hamilton Elks Sunday, any opinions? Not sure which two 9’s but I’m hoping it’s the Ross 9’s.

Look at that polo and those clean white sneaks. More like Suburban Meyer, amirite? #gotum

That right up the street from work for me, we have a corporate membership there. Nothing crazy, pretty open and relatively flat with just little natural land movements. With the weather we’ve had it’ll definitely roll out

I’ve played Elks three times, always on the Ross 18, and the two most recent times the greens had just been aerated, so maybe not the best point of reference here.

It’s a decent course, not great by any means but definitely better GCA than most courses in the Cincy area. The majority of the Ross greens are just as dramatic as you’d expect; I remember playing about 6 feet of break on a 15ish-foot putt once. As @T22Stans said, it’s pretty open and forgiving off the tee though.

Side note: the first time I played here was in 2016, there was a big poster-board in the pro shop showing a plan for a full-scale renovation. Supposed to have been done by Tim Liddy, but never materialized for some reason: https://asgca.org/liddy-asgca-to-renovate-ross-designed-hamilton-elks-golf-club/

That’s awesome!

(Urban is still scummy)

I don’t know anything more about the project from what you posted but people I play with in Cincy say it’s just kind of an old membership that’s not interested in investing a ton of money.

As far as GCA goes, I really really want to play Maketewah. Place looks incredible and the practice facilities are crazy looking.

Yeah, I’ve heard the same. Based on what he did at Hyde Park it’d be cool to see Liddy work at the Elks but that probably won’t happen for some time.

I’ve never played Mak but I’ve always heard the easiest way to get on is to just play the US Open qualifier they have there every year. Same thing with Camargo & Coldstream, playing the US Am qualifier is the best chance most of us will get. All three of them are pure though.

I’ve heard that Mak is not really absurdly expensive to join. Definitely somewhere I’ll look at if we end up moving to town.

Mak is one of the more affordable places in the city for jr members. It’s got some big, fun greens and a little cooky back 9. Really fun course. Both 9s end on a par3

Need to get out there man. My wife’s best friend’s dad is a member and I’ve never met him so I feel weird asking to go out.

It’s a very friendly reciprocal from my experience.

Not a member anywhere unfortunately. Chattanooga has some ridiculous junior initiation for juniors at the desirable clubs and the public golf is great.

Edit: did I mention I was a junior?

I don’t really like Mak all that much. I just don’t think the holes are very good. Needs some serious tree removal.

In regards to conditioning, every time I’ve played it the greens are soft and spongy. They are low annua and get very bumpy.

I like Hamilton Elks, but certainly stick with the Ross 18. The Hurdzan 9 is fine, if forgettable.

When I looked at Mak 5 years ago, the jr. initiation was a pretty good deal. The course is fine. Facilities are top notch. They’re pretty open to reciprocals.

If you’re looking for a good, golf-only club, I’ll put a plug in for my club, Miami View. The clubhouse won’t blow you away, but it’s a very good course that makes you play a variety of shots to score well. 470 yard par 4 opener is no gentle handshake. Driving range is great. Cheapest regular member dues in town.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m definitely into golf only, I don’t care about the club as long as the course is great at this point in my life. I’ll check into Miami view!

Also, Hamilton Elks was pretty cool. Suuuuper fast and firm cause of the lack of rain. Some quirky holes and looks like the fairway mowing lines and green surfaces have lost some size to time, but very fun.

What do you think your choice would be for a Junior membership that’s a good golf course and semi affordable?

I’m not sure if it’s still going on but Losantiville had a big promotion this summer to bring in new members. I heard a couple members say that they can play at Mak and only have to pay the cart fees.
