I started to answer, but I don’t really know either. I am sure the younger hipsters will chime in. They do have dairy in them, that’s all I know. Yes @DingleJones rapsberry chocolate graeters is the GOAT ice cream
Okay, I found milk stout via my friendly neighborhood search engine.
What the hell is wrong with brewers? Does that stuff pass muster with the Reinheitsgebot? It can’t actually be considered beer, right?I suspect it’s just another evidence of late stage capitalism (shout out @Randy) and the corrosive influence of Big Lactose.
It’s definitely my favorite Graeter’s flavor, but I like Dojo Gelato far better. They are at Findlay market. And as far as ice cream goes, I like Jeni’s better than Graeter’s.
The difference is that there is variety even with the set offerings at Madtree.
Lift is the great light beer option, Shade is an incredible sour, Dreamsicle (summer) variety, Psychopathy/PSA (basic IPA), Happy Amber (Ale), Rounding Third (Red Ale), Entropic Theory (super hoppy IPA)… I could go on, but all are better top to bottom vs. any other brewery in the area. Yeah they’ll have some odd-balls and specialty beers, but it’s the beauty of the taproom. Every other brewery does the same.
Braxton is located down in Covington, their Summer Trip is amazing
Edit: should note I’m not big on beer, whiskey and bourbon are more me, so I like beers that don’t taste like beer
Jenis has never clicked with me - but don’t think I’ve tried the right flavors. They have a lot of grass clipping/dandelion type flavored stuff I’m not interested in. Had one with bourbon and cayenne pepper that was good though.
All in on this too. My favorite flavors from Jeni’s are/were goat cheese with sour cherries and sweet corn with blackberry sauce.
Yeesh that is an exotic ice cream flavor…gotta find some.
And @TwoCents I feel like that German Purity law doesn’t have as much sway as it used to. The kids want their craft beer these days and the brewers wanna give it to them.
You sweet little Cinci folk. You just don’t even realize that Cleveland has Mitchell’s and Sweet Moses ice creams, dozens of insanely good breweries, and an actual Major League Baseball team. Seeing y’all try… it’s like seeing a dog wearing clothes. Keep at it, little buddy. You’ll find it.
Best gelato I’ve had in the US is Black Dog Gelato in Chicago. Hands down. Case closed. You can thank me later.
They had a maple-whiskey flavored ice cream on a stick dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with bacon.
And that was just the beginning.
I really hope we get an Indians-Reds World Series in our lifetime. Man, that would be something…
I’m actually a huge fan of Cincinnati. Good city, good sports fandom/stadia, good beer. Skyline is great. But Cleveland’s home and just happens to be objectively better in every possible way. Objectively.
Cleveland very well might be a lovely place, but I imagine it is difficult to defend when the general public just thinks of these (hilarious) Cleveland tourism videos:
My wife and I went to Cleveland for an anniversary trip last year. I like the city. But, I could never live there because of the winter.
Man these videos got so popular in my town. Even my dad would make it a point to show it to other parents when we had people over. When I got my job offer in cleveland I was so afraid to move here because all I knew were those videos and that they had bad sports teams. Was pleasantly surprised when I actually moved here.
Needless to say I try to convince everyone back home “Cleveland is great!!!” And all of them point to these videos and say “no it’s not”. Then people in Cleveland start ripping on New Jersey based on a few episodes of the jersey shore and a bad layover at Newark airport. I guess people in both places want at least one other place they can “lol that place is the worst”. (I get no respect!!!)
Also people tend to have indifferent to moderately positive opinions on Cincinnati. No idea why
This cracks me up: “Hey look where my kid just moved!”
I am from a small town in Minnesota and my friends and I watched these when we were younger and laughed so hard. I do feel bad for Cleveland, just people from random places all over the country watching and laughing thinking, “Wow Cleveland sucks”… “All our fish have aids”
Lol
Re: people being indifferent on Cincinnati, I think it somewhat escapes the rust-belt perceptions that people have of Northern OH, MI, PA, etc. Plus the association with Northern KY and Cincinnati almost feels like the gateway to the South/Southern culture. I like Cincinnati quite a bit, but I don’t think the average person would find it that much different than most Midwest cities (which are largely way better than people realize).
You’re definitely right about it not having the rust belt perception. I also can’t help but laugh that a couple of dudes making a joke youtube video have done more to the perception of Cleveland than the actual Cleveland tourism board has done. Someone needs to track those guys down and get them on the city payroll.
I like Braxton, but their Graeters beers have been mostly misses for me. MadTree’s Rubis Cacao is what Braxton’s Graeters Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip wishes it could be.
As a lifelong Westsider, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Westside Brewing. I agree with MadTree #1 overall. Blood Orange IPA is coming out soon. Brink is also very good.
Overall, a really good beer scene in Cincinnati right now. Ohio overall, really.
No kidding. In Cleveland we actually had this beer passport where you would go around to 30 breweries and get stamps at each one. Sure, a lot of these places were mediocre, but it’s unbelievable to me that there are at least 30 places within a reasonable driving distance that make their own beer, and that’s just in Cleveland.
For the record, despite trying at nearly every brewery I couldn’t seem to find a good imperial stout. Couple good stouts along the way, but nothing over 7% that was particularly memorable.
