Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) and localized ice cream debates (Part 1)

Looking for a fourth for Denison GC this coming Saturday, July 20th, for a 7:40am tee time.

ETA: Yes, I have Refugees scheduled at Denison two Saturdays in a row. Both outings have room for a fourth.

Live in Lakewood, don’t belong anywhere (yet.) Favorite course in the area is definitely Manakiki. Also like Shale Creek, Pleasant Valley, and Big Met if it’s not stupid busy. Sweetbriar Legacy doesn’t suck, Valley of the Eagles and Sleepy Hollow are on my list to play still. Grew up in Erie, and will vouch that Whispering Woods is well worth the hour and 15ish from the city.

Alright sounds like we now have two west side Cleveland folks on the refuge. I live on the border of Lakewood near big met so it sounds like we live pretty close.

It can be a little tough for me to find time to play 18 outside of my league, but we’ll have to play at some point. I’m a member at Lakewood (still so confusing that this is in Westlake) so we can play there, but I also love sweetbriar legacy and all the other courses you mentioned

Really looking forward to Denison this weekend, and we still have room for one more Refugee for our 7:40 am time Saturday! Looks like it’ll be a nice day and good to get out early before it’s too hot. Had a great meet up with @scuff and @Ty.Webb this weekend and look forward to back to back refugee weekends. If you could join, reach out to @TwoCents who is graciously setting it up for us.

I would literally just hit a 5 iron off the tee of 15, 16, and 18

See this is why the Refuge is just aces - the people.

You’re a real mensch, @scuff. Thank you.

Gotta have your baby reppin’ the brand! A small thank you for your hospitality at Moraine. Since we could not get you a Redbreast 12, I got you a red onesie. I went with a 12-month because some babies are bigger than others

Wish I could join, but I’ll be out of town then. I’ve played a lot of good public courses in Ohio, but Granville has some how alluded me.

Bummer! Would love to play with you sometime. Let’s try to get out sometime this summer.

I haven’t played Big Met in forever, but I really want to again.

Oh man I love that course. You’re going to be driving through Cleveland in a few weeks right?

Yeah, I am. I talked about Manakiki, but my personal history with Big Met has me wondering if I should sneak in there.

It’s a really tough call. Even though Manakiki is the “better” course and I always enjoy playing it, there’s something about Big Met that I just really enjoy (provided pace of play is good). It’s a little easier so it’s tough to really shoot a bad score and it’s in a much more scenic area.

A little more info for Big Met: I imagine your GPS will take you the following route:

I’ve highlighted the route, and noted that there’s an area with a very sharp left turn. I don’t know enough about the truck you’ll be driving to know whether this is trouble or not, but just thought I’d point it out. The parking lot is huge so there shouldn’t be any issues as far as parking.

Thanks! This is all assuming my back won’t be totally wrecked from loading up that 26 foot truck.

Here to report back on yet another overwhelmingly successful Refugee meetup, this time thanks to @TwoCents for setting it up and hosting us out at Denison this morning.

Folks, we are lucky to have @TwoCents here with us. Truly one of the good guys. For someone who has only been playing the game seriously for a year, I was very impressed. Not only with his game, which is better than he describes, but as we have seen here on the Refuge, with his knowledge, perspective and attitude toward golf. He GETS it. Truly a pleasure to play with. Do yourself a favor and make it over to Denison if you are close. Oh and as for his game, I would put a lot of money on it improving quickly - smooth swing, showed some fantastic touch around the greens for someone new to the game, and a very handy putting stroke.

It was great to also be joined by a relatively new Refugee, @Tgilbert18 . Awesome dude settling down in Columbus who has serious game. I am glad we were not playing for any $$ today, because he would have wiped the floor with me. Clearly an athlete, I don’t think I have ever seen more lag in a real life swing. Very Sergio-esque move from our guy, it was fun to watch. Great putting stroke too.

All in all, a fantastic morning with great people on a fun golf course, which is about as good as it gets. Totally worth the 4:15 alarm clock this morning! Another example of the community here, which really is special. Look forward to the next meet up!

This is great to hear. I can’t wait to get in on one. It looks like my league is hitting a few repeat courses in August which I would be happy to skip. Let me look at some dates and get back to you guys because I can come down from Cleveland to join.

Thanks for the kind words, @LJP. I’m flattered. Sadly, you’ve now taken the “act like an asshole” card out of play for me the next time I host at Denison. I’ll just have to improvise. @Tgilbert18 did outdrive all of us pretty much every single hole, as I recall. Modest, never made a big deal of it, just hammered that poor defenseless ball a long way. Every. Single. Time. Clear skies, the heat was bearable, good course, good conditions, and excellent company. A good day of golf.

Now that all of you are tantalized by the prospect of playing Denison with me, I’ll note that I’m playing there again on Saturday June 27th with @anon71339061 and @Livi, 7:30 tee time. We could use a fourth. If any of you are interested, DM me or post below and I’ll add you to the list. Likewise, it appears there’s interest in one or more August Denison outings: I’ll see if we can get those coordinated, too.

Haha thank you @LJP! It was awesome to be joined by you and @TwoCents who set up this round for us! It was really cool to play with two guys who clearly just love the game of golf and the whole environment (Idk how many pictures @LJP took of the course but it had be pushing 50-75). It was something I haven’t quite experienced before and I really enjoyed that. I hadn’t played at Denison in a long time and had forgot how cool of a course it was so anyone on here should definitely get out there if they get the chance. Since I’m new to The Refuge I’m looking forward to meeting more of you and if anyone is looking to play in the Columbus area definitely hit me up!
