I can do the 27th as well or later in month of August. Just let me know. Appreciate the invite.
Cool. I’ve noted you for the 27th and “also August”.
Played yesterday with @TwoCents and @DP123, then @JohnnyPanton. Can confirm, we are still batting 1.000 on Refugee meetups. Great day, gents.
Agreed: I’m glad I made the trip. Despite the sweltering weather it was a great time.
A few memorable quotes:
“36 handicap my ass” - @Brick after my approach to #1, which did not suck.
“You managed that hole really well. Until you got on the green.” - @DP123 after I managed a four putt.
Also, my God those greens. There was one where @Brick warned us “this green is like something by MC Escher.” He was right: it was baffling.
Well I’m glad to hear you guys got out there and had a great time. I went 43-53 today and my game is now in shambles so it’s probably for the best I sat this one out. Any other memorable moments from the round?
More than I can recount here. Just a sampling:
- There is a very, very long wooden bridge between #11 and #12, which spans the marsh that bisects the course from east to west. Brick told us that club tradition held that first timers may attempt to putt the length of the bridge. Success would bring a $20 from the other party members. Neither @DP123 or I succeeded, but it was a fun little break.
- #16 is just so damn beautiful, it must be seen.
- @Brick had a caddy. The poor kid was new-ish to the job. He actually acquitted himself pretty well, with one small error: he forgot a sand wedge at 11 which wasn’t noticed until 12. @Brick borrowed our cart while we let a single play through, and drove back to retrieve it. We gave the kid a bit of ribbing about it.
- The closing holes are just great (#16 is, just, yeah). 18 is going to stay with me: I was this close to getting par on it. It’s a helluva hole.
- At one point @DP123 and I both admitted that the fairways were so immaculately maintained that we were each a bit afraid the Fairway Police would bust us for taking divots with our approach shots.
- @DP123 can send it. Several impressive drives.
- The bull session in the locker room after the round, for which @JohnnyPanton joined us, was entertaining. After 18 sweltering holes a cold beer is always the right answer. @Brick was a generous host, and the conversation was good.
- We timed the beers well: a thunderstorm rolled through just as we sat down. It cleared up quickly enough that @Brick and @JohnnyPanton were able to get another 14 holes in before getting rained out.
If you ever get the chance to play Sand Ridge, jump at it. Our host was gracious and generous, the conditions were excellent, and the club seems extremely well run. It was a high quality course, and we had high-quality company.
Later this month I’m going to drive a 26 foot moving truck from Chicago to Philadelphia. It’s an 11 hour drive and Cleveland seems to be a good halfway point. I was thinking of loading up the clubs last, stopping somewhere in Northern Ohio and doing a play and stay to break up the drive. Any public recommendations that aren’t too far off of 90? Please and thanks.
Manakiki is right off the exit from 90 eastbound where 90 intersects 271 on the east side of Cleveland. Fowler’s Mill is about a 20 minute detour from that same location.
Sleepy Hollow Golf Course is excellent. Boulder Creek is really good, too. Both of those are pretty convenient to the highway.
Also second @TwoCents - Manakiki is a Ross and Fowler’s is a Dye. You can’t go wrong with any of these four.
Sweet! Thanks fellas. That Manakiki spot looks like it could be the one. Driving this big ass truck and towing a car, I don’t want to drive very far off the highway.
I played Big Met a few times awhile back (college roommates were west siders), so there’s a little history there that’d be fun to revisit, but I guess at the end of the day seeing a new place would be more fun.
I live two miles from Manakiki. Let me know when you’re swinging through, maybe we can meet up (although we are getting close to my wife’s due date so who knows).
Nice. Looks like it might be a Monday afternoon, (July 30). I’ll bring a baby gift and you can just tell your wife you need to pick it up (for 4 hours). Congrats, by way.
This is an appropriate gift: https://store.nolayingup.com/collections/baby-collection/products/infant-rip-snap-tee?variant=8111156363365
Lol thanks man. It may have to be a game time decision for me, but I’ll reconnect as the date approaches.
What’s up… New to the refuge but have been a fan and listening to NLU for a while now. I live in New Albany, which is only like 20 minutes from Denison GC. I’d be down for either the 20th or 27th if there are still some spots open!
Gotcha. I’ll add you to the tally.

Any amateur in the state needing an event to play, check out the Turnberry Men’s Amateur, coming July 20 and 21!
Three Refugees are playing Denison GC at 7:30am on Saturday July 27th. We plan to walk the course. We have room for a fourth if anyone is interested. Just DM me if you’d like to join us.
Enjoy the walk on the back 9 and don’t make plans for the following day! I thought I was going to die last time I did it!
