Inverness With the Sunday bag on Saturday. Can’t. Fu$kin. Wait.
Anybody in Cleveland/akron want to try and get out Saturday morning? I don’t have a tee time anywhere yet but can try and find something if anyone is interested.
Columbus playas: If you had to choose between the following for a single round, which would you go with?
Kyber Run
Links at Echo Springs
The Ridge (formerly Buck Ridge)
I haven’t played any of them in 8 years.
I’ll admit it…I’m jealous.
Links was in pretty good shape in June when I played it. I used to hit up Buck Ridge a lot a few years back, but they switched 9s.
I’d hit up links at echo.
Possibly…I may already be playing but I’m trying to get that ironed out today/tomorrow
I played The Ridge a couple weeks ago. They flipped the 9’s with new ownership, but the place is in way better shape than it used to be. Definitely a solid option after I avoided it for so long after the course was poorly managed.
They have a nice package deal in the Zanesville area, where you can stay and play EagleSticks and the Virtues, along with two nights lodging, for $260 pp.
EagleSticks was a bit rough around the edges, with Covid being a factor as they reduced staff significantly. Bunkers were bad, tees a bit rough in spots but it’s still a fun course to play, and overall conditions were very playable. A bit soft from the rains and humid as hell.
The Virtues was marginally better in terms of conditioning, especially the bunkers, but it was still pretty soft (overnight rain Saturday into Sunday).
Both courses have some risk/reward holes; it’s fun watching young guys launch (and occasionally reload) on short par 4’s (like #7 at EagleSticks, #6 at the Virtues). Rough was thick and it seems to me the native areas have expanded since I was down here the last time.
Fun weekend and got really lucky with the Sunday weather compared to the forecast.
I’d HIGHLY advise making the reasonable commute to Windmill Golf Center in Macedonia. Huge range, chipping/short game area with a big bunker, big putting green, and 3 9-hole par 3 loops. Doesn’t get much better. I’d kill for something like that here in Columbus.
I love Windmill, it’s just a 30 minute drive is too much for me on week nights. Got a putter fitting done there about a month ago.
In Macedonia? Was Randy your fitter? I’ve been considering doing a putter fitting (probably this winter) as they have the indoor green
No, Scott did the putter fitting. Hooked up to the SAM Lab and everything. I highly recommend it, he knows his stuff.
I’ve been experimenting finding something that fits. I have something now that has helped. It would be nice to have the data to make a truly informed decision. I’ve never done anything to get putting numbers. Never even used the Ping cradle and my phone. Glad to hear you had a positive experience. I don’t really doubt the Windmill staff. They have the history to back up their reputation
For as much shit talking as has been done about Little Mountain on here recently, I just got an email about their Iron Man Scramble on 10/3 and it actually sounds fun—3 man teams, playing as a 6some. I can’t make it, but I’d look past my opinion on a course to have drinks and play a scramble on a nice fall day so just putting out the PSA.
My comments about Little Mountain recently are directly tied to playing an everyday round of golf. Events are different thing. Especially things like iron man/cross country scrambles. I played in an end of year cross country scramble last November at a course that isn’t anywhere close to the level of LM and had a blast. I hope you decide to put together a team and tear it up!
I’m unfortunately not able to Saturday.
Not sure of peoples schedules but I’ve taken off Monday and Tuesday next week and will likely be looking to sweep some dew one or both mornings. Sounds like Shawnee will be post-aerification by 2 weeks so that’s one I’ll be looking at. Played Brookledge on Saturday, and they definitely had aerated recently. Another week will likely be enough to get them back to decent.
These will be my last 2 days to play before I shut it down for the season, so would love to get out with some of you guis!
What’s the overall opinion of Oak Shadows in New Philadelphia? I played there with my Dad and it was so, so, so, so good. It should absolutely be on our “Ohio Tour” list.
Maybe a little rough around the edges - someone needed a lesson in cutting cups at some point this summer - but it was outstanding overall. I’m not really prone to hyperbole but it is probably the best course I’ve played all year.
It was $25 to ride. If it was closer to Cleveland…it would be double that, easily. Can’t recommend it enough.
Were you on the phone when I was signing in today? The woman was talking to someone about this event, explaining the format, etc.
LM starts people off #10 far too often, including today. 10 is 471 with a cliff to the left and the green hard against it, too. #13 is 487 with the same cliff and the green even closer to it. The cliff is down the entire left side of both fairways. And it was straight into the breeze today.
The FIL sent me a wonderful text today and we have an afternoon tee time at Moraine Country Club tomorrow. Not sure if I will be able to sleep tonight. Feel a little bad because the brother-in-law (2 kids, large dog) cannot make it.
I agree completely; great course and worth the drive down from CLE; when I played in July they gave me the strong indication it was closing at the end of the year.
Did they indicate that to you?
