Roll Call: North Carolina

I live about 5 minutes from there, echo everything you said. It’s been awhile since I’ve played there but I remember the longest hole is about 160 and the shortest is around 50. Great mix of holes surrounded by trees, protected by water (or power lines), and wide open holes in the middle of a field of wire grass. I used to play there a lot as a kid and thought it was the coolest place

Just google mapped it, I’m 10 min from there…no idea it existed!

Will have to check it out when this friggggggin rain ends.

Alright boys, heading to Raleigh next month for a Friday-Tuesday or Wednesday work/family trip. Trying to keep the weekend as open as possible so I can get some golf in. Potentially looking to splurge on a round at Tobacco Road or something. Any thoughts?

so it’s gonna be 36 and sunny at noon on saturday in the Triad. Good enough to assume frost delays lifted at or by then?

Tobacco Road is a blast and highly recommend. Some other courses in that area I recommend are Pine Hollow, Lonnie Poole is fun but a little pricey, and The Preserve is a little bit farther away but a fun track. Also heard good things about River Ridge but I have not personally played it.

I wouldn’t play the Preserve for anything less than $200 cash upfront. It’s in nice condition but the layout sucks so much I’m surprised the PGA Tour hasn’t put it on the rota.

Pine Hollow is good. So is Lonnie Poole, great layout. The current problem is it’s been raining a lot and the soil in these parts is clay.

I’d recommend driving at least as far as Tobacco Road or further to Hyland, Southern Pines, Mid Pines depending on your budget. The soil from Sanford to Pinehurst is sandy so it’s not muddy.

yeah you should be good on the frost delay front…its going to be fairly moist though

i mean the 7 day rainfall totals in the triad are like 2.5-3+ inches

Honestly the only place worth playing in the Triad/Triangle until we get at least 7 days straight without rain is the Sandhills.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates Jordan Lake Preserve. Work buddies love it and play there all the time, for some reason… so I don’t play with them as often as I’d like.

River Ridge is… fine but not all that unique.

I’d second Dave’s advice on going down towards SP/Pinehurst area. Maybe by next month things will look a bit better around here, in which case I’d say any of the three university courses (Lonnie Poole, UNC Finley or Duke), Pine Hollow is great if you’re near the Clayton area.

The Preserve has 2 forced carries on the 1st hole! It’s a classic example of building a golf course with the sole purpose of selling houses. They gave all the land that was unusable for housing to the architect to build the course.

The only hole there I like is 9. 11 is OK.

The last time I played there, we played the wrong tees on a windy day. I made a birdie on 18 for a smooth 106 LOL.

definitely might be a little wet out there…but the fiance is going wedding dress shopping so I gotta take advantage and get out there for 18

reeeeeeeeeally liking the look/cost of SP. Donald Ross for $69 (nice) after 12 PM? WE LIKE THAT. Would love a partner to play with March 28th

Probably can get it cheaper than that honestly. I’d be happy to join on the 28th, I’m sure we could get a crew! @Double_Bogey_Dave @Just-a-little-right @ATLtoRDU33 Etc

I’m down for Southern Pines

Semi-related to your Danville reference. There is a Danville Country Club (Danville Golf Club?) that is a Donald Ross design that is also a part of the ClubCorp thing I mentioned to you along with Alamance. Do you know anything about that place in Danville? We will definitely get out to Alamance when weather permits. As you have mentioned, the rain this time of year makes that area unenjoyable at times.

I think I might be able to manage that!

Played Danville last summer through ClubCorp. I’m a big fan of Ross courses but didn’t care for Danville. Would love to know what it looked like about 70 years ago. Seemed very overgrown and tight - you’re either in the fairway or the trees, not much in between. Felt like I played the same hole several times. I used to joke I’d keep playing Ross courses until I found one I didn’t like and I was doing well until I got to Danville. Hate to hate on a course because every course is somebody’s home course - it wasn’t bad - Danville just didn’t do it for me.
