I played Occano a few months ago. Was in fantastic shape. i would recommend it.
Thereās also a dope bbq joint just across the water called Old Colony Smokehouse. Would make a great post round meal
Hey Iām coming down to play Pinehurst in March and looking for some courses to bookend the trip in Raleigh. Leaning more toward playing Duke over Lonnie Poole - any course you think I should play over Duke?
The university courses are the best public tee times in the triangle. I prefer Lonnie Poole over Duke, but thereās probably some NCSU/Raleigh bias in that ranking. Pine Hollow in Clayton is very solid, but a bit of a hike from the airport.
Another vote for Lonnie over Duke. Both tough big ball parks but the views and overall course design at LP is better than Duke IMO. Also some Raleigh bias here.
Pine Hollow is definitely more of a hike from where I am staying.
Iām just a sucker for RTJ courses so that was why I was leaning Duke. Also open to any courses between Raleigh and Pinehurst!
Nothing at all wrong with Duke, fun and challenging course, usually in great shape unless it rained that week.
To me, between PH and Raleigh, the options are Tobacco Road and Quail Ridge. TR obviously the most common addition to PH trips, Quail Ridge is a fine course. Sanford Muni is the only public between there and Raleigh and itās cheap if you need a fix.
Missed my chance of nailing down a round at TR. Sanford was a thought because it is on the way and is a Donald Ross course.
Thanks for the help!
I AM WAITING!
When will it not be snowing there?
Almost 20°C right now babe
I meanā¦kinda haha. I live in Sanford and would say to play Quail Ridge 9 times and Sanford 1 if splitting 10 rounds between them. Hyland is another option closer to Pinehurst.
Um. QR is not a Ross. But they still put a plaque up to him on 12. Everyone be trying to claim him.
But it is still fun. As is Hyland.
Soon. But the best season I think is April or September.
Sanford is alleged to have their front 9 designed by Ross. The more Iāve looked into it, probably a lie. Based on investigation by anonymous users of the internet, there is no record in the Tufts Archive and nothing actually at Sanford that would prove he has any involvement.

So many āallegedā Ross courses in the area. Front 9 @ Scotch Meadows in the dirty Burg, s/o the deceased Richmond Pines in Rockingham.
I wonder how many of those courses that ālook like a Rossā were actually early Maples courses?
Hey, greetings from Massachusetts. I am heading down to Chapel Hill for a wedding May 31st. Would love to play the Finley course but I see non-members can only book 5 days in advance which I assume would put be out of luck on a Saturday. If anyone is a member Iād love to link up! Open to other suggestions as well. Heading to Pinehurst for a couple of days after. Thanks!
@everhms @Packgolf9 @ldshuping thanks to everyone for the recs! Occano and Cutter Creek are looking like the top options. Canāt wait to get out there, if anyone is in the area around that time and wants to get a match in, lmk!
Doing college visits this coming March and starting in Raleigh / Wake before working our way up to VA. Wakeās course looks amazing but private. It looks like we can get on at Duke, UNC and NC Stateās home tracks. I looked at spots in So. Pines, but itās a bit out of the way for our schedule.
Any opinions on the three if we had a choice?
- Duke Golf Club
- Finley Golf Club
- Lonnie Pool
- other?
