Roll Call: North Carolina

I don’t mind driving a good distance for a solid club. I did that in Seattle and now do that here in Buffalo. I am not one for the glitz and the glamour so all the pools/amenities isn’t needed. Just a place to play as much as possible/grab a beer and burger after the round/beat balls on the range till my hands bleeds haha

I never understood an extra 30 mins or so being a huge issue. If you’re going to spend 5 plus hours out there anyway, another 30 to get what you want is well worth it.

agreed!

What if I don’t want to spend 5 plus hours on the course?

that was based on an average round taking 3:30-4:00
warm up time, putting, etc…time on property.

Emergency 9s are certainly a thing, and if you play at odd times or a lot of 9s, that would certainly be a factor in what private club to choose.

For me it was worth the extra cost because it allowed me to play a lot more. I generally don’t have 5+ hours for golf on the weekends. Mainly because if you can’t get a good tee time, that 5 hours ends up being in the middle of the day which means you can’t do anything before or after. Now I can play 9 before work, play 9 or even 18 in the evenings, or play 18 on the weekends and still be able to make it to my kid’s sporting events or whatever other commitment we might have.

I have time for one Sunday afternoon round while getting from Raleigh to charlotte in a few weeks.

Should I hit Mid pines, southern pines, or Tobacco Road?

If you haven’t played it before, 100% Tobacco Road. Everyone should experience it at least twice. If you have, I would go Mid Pines.

If you want to play on the surface of the moon, albeit an awesome course TR is for you.

If you want to play a timeless traditional Donald Ross course then MP or SP

Have you heard of Cape Fear National?

Appreciate the nudge! Going to squeeze that second round in and see TR and Mid-Pines.

Anyone have reccs for lodging in the general Pinehurst/Southern Pines vicinity? Seems like plenty of corporate chain hotels, but always down to try something more local if available.

I’ve always enjoyed being at Pine Needles, I wouldn’t call it nice but it’s got a charm and a cool bar. Otherwise Air BNB etc. Haven’t stayed anywhere else besides the resort.

Pine Crest inn was cool, had breakfast there and is pretty famous.

Yep, use to play most of my golf there before I joined Pine Valley and CFN decided to go private.

Great course, some quirky holes that take time to learn but lots of fun.

Weird one here. In Asheville with the parents and in-laws for the weekend. Any good brunch spots/sports bars to watch some hockey/golf?

The only “sports bar” is Pack Tavern. For brunch, biscuit head is the staple.

If you want to go out of your way, 4 sisters bakery in Black Mountain is our favorite spot to hit on the way out, great pastries/food/coffee and a nice front lawn style tables in a quiet neighborhood

Also if you want bbq and beer, riverside rhapsody just north of Asheville is great and if you just want a great patio by the river, Zillicoah

Moving to the Le Grange/Goldsboro area in mid May and will be there through the summer and early fall. Does anyone know of any good Men’s Associations or general weekend cash games in that area or at a course in the area?

Welcome to area @BLT. I am about 45-50 minutes south of that area. There are plenty of courses up that way but I am not familiar with what they have going on from a Men’s group/game perspective. Walnut Creek (Private) and Lane Tree (Public) would be where I would check first around Goldsboro. Depending on how far you want to drive Southern Wayne is a smaller semi-private country club that is an excellent value for the money. Cutter Creek (Snow Hill/Public), Ironwood (Greenville, Public) are some other great options to consider pretty close to that area.
