From what I know, absolutely take that chance and go play it. Hopefully I’ll get up there myself sometime soon, been on my list of places to visit for a while.
I have played it once, the two 9’s are completely different, and you will absolutely love the finishing holes. Great views from the tee box looking back into the city.
Greetings from Chilly Indiana!
My yearly buddies trip is looking at the Raleigh Durham area for our 2024 trip. Thursday through Sunday trip in early October and hoping to play the Duke, UNC, and NC State courses during the trip. Anyone have any suggestions or insight into a trip like that?
Also, part of our trip tradition is a steak dinner on the Saturday evening. Seems like there are lots of choices in the area. Any suggestions on the best steakhouse in the triangle?
Thanks!
Duke should be pretty easy to book. Not sure about Finley as I haven’t played there since the renovation, although people seem to really like the course post renovation. Lonnie is harder to get a tee time, but if you call the pro shop and describe what you’re doing they may be able to help you out.
As far as steak houses go, my favorite is the Angus Barn. Great steaks and a fun atmosphere. They take reservations on their website, should be pretty easy to reserve way in advance.
Fun idea, all 3 courses are fun and have their own identity.
There’s a couple solid local steakhouses in the triangle, by far the most known and biggest machine (not a negative) is the Angus Barn, always a great experience. Nana’s in Durham is excellent as well, now under new ownership (by a local Durham rockstar chef) and it should continue to be great. Bin54 in Chapel Hill is also very solid. Really depends on where you’re staying and how far you want to travel.
I second @roachmk comments about booking tee times.
Thanks for the replies guys! I generally start reaching out to courses in June to try and ask about October tee times. I usually get told that I need to call back 1 or 2 weeks before the tee time. Hopefully luck will be on my side. Any other courses in the area that are a good pick if we are unable to get on at one of the college courses?
Angus Barn seemed to be at the top of most lists I saw online. But, much like most out of towners I am sure, the name “Angus Barn” had me questioning it. Good to know it lives up to the hype.
Thanks again!
Angus Barn is great. Nana Steak and Metro Steakhouse are the best steaks in Durham.
Other good options if you can’t get on one of the University courses are Chapel Ridge, Umstead Pines, and Pine Hollow. Tobacco Road (if it’s in the budget) can be reached from the Triangle in less than an hour.
Mill Creek in Mebane is really good too.
Avoid the Preserve unless you are into being beaten down.
Pine Hollow is great bang for your buck. Highly suggest getting a buzz one night and going over to knight golf par 3 under the lights and playing some fun golf over there after dark.
I’d throw in the gem that is Hillandale too
Pine Hollow is great. Only played it once but thoroughly enjoyed it. Got to get to KP one of these weeks I am in Chapel Hill along with Hillandale. Seems like so much fun…
Hillandale is a cheap ass muni just be aware
I thought knights was awesome for a guys trip, something to do after the sun goes down but still golf and not just drive shack
Hello everyone, I will be flying into Charlotte the Thursday before Master’s week (have a practice round ticket for Monday. We are going to be staying in Columbia but wanted to see what people’s suggestions would be on courses around there and Charlotte. We will have a rental car so distance isn’t an issue.
Monroe and Mooresville are your best bets in the Charlotte area.
Also, Sifford in Charlotte is a great 9 hole option.
If you’re staying in Columbia, I would drive to Camden and play there. It’s private but they are open during Masters week.
I’d throw my hat in for the Peddler steakhouse.
Old-school no frills place - steak, side, and salad bar. The peddler will come to your table with all the primal cuts and you choose which cut/how big of a piece you want and he cuts it tableside.
No reservations so if there is a wait, just go across the street to the Irish pub O’Malleys for a couple pints.
Think we will be doing the same with Aiken, they have a decent Master’s week deal
Camden is f’n awesome.
Camden>>Aiken just my humble opinion
Por que no los dos?
Camden CC is one fabulous course
Hoping to treat my brother to a round of golf at a nice course near Charlotte (where he lives) but I have no idea about the Charlotte golf scene. Any recs for a course that would be nice for this?
